    Default FWD with locked diff

    Hi,

    I can't afford to buty an LSD box. I was wondering if anyone has welded up there diff and made a FWD locker. How did it go, was it drivable etc,

    Thanks,

    this is for drag racing only? mayyyybe it is doable..

    for street?

    RWD get away with it becuase of power oversteer.
    FWD = terminal understeer?

    I had a guy with a fairly angry turbo swift come to wakefield early this year and he had welded his diff. This thing made 240?-odd fwkws and ran semi slicks. I went for a ride and it didn't turn too well It was ok once he got on the power but it looked like a lot of work to get it to turn in, had pretty low entry speeds. Made up for it once he was able to put the power down though!

    It was mainly a drag car, but still rego'd and apparently it gets out for the odd cruise etc. He reckons it was liveable Looked like a major pain in the arse, guess it all comes down to your definition.

    My definition would be no.

    Actually, if this thread gets on to legitimate fwd diffs (ie proper aftermarket lsds) i'd be interested to hear people's experiences with 1-way vs 1.5-way? I was eyeing off a 2nd hand 1.5-way trd item and shied away cause i wasn't sure i'd want any decel lockup, even for a car that spends most of it's time on a track (certainly not a daily)

    Lol, you could lock it but if your going to use it to drive around, just get a factory lsd and shim it so its close to the same as a locker, but will behave itself.
    I used a locked one on the circuit and it was ok, but not even close to a good LSD in performance. If there was ever a car that loved to bond with Big tree's and poles beside a road, It is a FWD with a locker, followed closely by virtually any type of Holden, unless it is a rebadged Toyota.
    Lets just hope your not a fan of backing off!

    also need to factor in the extra effort pulling out a fwd gearbox compared to a rear diff!
    then when you have it out you'd need to pull the box apart. Is it really worth all the effort if you're going lsd eventually anyway?

    HI, Thanks for the reply's. The answers were as i expected which will make you wonder why i asked it. I just though someone would have done it and i just wanted to know how it worked. I was also pondering the idear in a rally car (on a loose surface).

    Cheers.
