Catastrophic failure is usually takes the form of the inputshaft to layshaft gears being damaged (loosing teeth). I've seen this twice? (norbie once?, someone else once?).Originally Posted by 30psi 4agte
Also chipped 2nd gear on the layshaft is the other thing I've seen twice I think now? (both ex norbie boxes)...

I've chipped teeth on the input shaft three times and totally mashed the layshaft gears once.

Do you think thats cos it was a alloy plate box ? or just a weakness in general ??Originally Posted by Norbie

Thanks wilbo
that clears it up for me . ive had a steel plate W box out of a GX81 cressida for 15 odd years , one of the first imported by API in melb .
I never new what box it was . i know the 5th geras count of a W58 but this gx 81 was 55 and 35 . so now looks like its a W57

Only two of those breakages were with alloy plate boxes. I couldn't tell you what ultimately caused any of the failures except that W5x boxes weren't built to cop that much torque!Originally Posted by 30psi 4agte

Torque? or shock loads? Are you trying to tell all of us that you never shock loaded some of the boxes you broke?

the teeth normally only chip through shockloading and it generally only happens on the input shaft if the input or layshaft bearings are sloppy, but the front layshaft bearings on w series boxes do giveway without alot of warning.Originally Posted by Norbie
the boxes can handle a fair amount of torque its more how you drive that determines how long they'll last.

As a matter of fact each of my boxes let go in gear, not during gearchanges or clutch dumps or whatever. And despite what people say about me I was very gentle with my car after the first gearbox broke, which is why I never did another quarter mile run until after the V160 conversion.
The issue here is the 2JZ with factory sequential turbos has enormous torque from very low RPM, and this is what the W5x didn't cope with IMO.

The 5 or so we broke in our old 1JZGTE levin broke all in 5th gear just before the braking zone on the back straight,
so sheer force, not shock loading i'd say.

Ah thread revive , 5Th is generally never a strong gear in any overdrive box as its sort of hanging out the back suported by bearings made for overdrive cruising not flat out power.
Dave
Yeah found this when i was looking for options of gearsets for the w series boxes.
Of the probably almost 10 boxes i've seen broken,
every single one has been the input shaft gears that break.
Anyone know of a company other than PPG that do W series upgraded gearsets?

try ivan albins in wendoree its called albins off road they can do ratios like new 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th
It is because of the number of teeth.Originally Posted by 30psi 4agte
1st, 2nd, 3rd have 33, 34, 35 teeth or less and are quite bug chunly teeth,
the input shaft has 32/47 or 34/46 teeth so because there is nearly 50 teeth on the layshaft,
the teeth are a lot smaller and weaker.
Emailed then and have got a reply,Originally Posted by Celica RA45
