the pointy bit is spring loaded, so provides enough pressure to keep the collets apart, then the outer presses the spring down...allowing the collets to drop into place

it sorta worked i had to push so the collets stuck onto the valve and then whack it with the hammer so the collets seated properly
yeah, tap with a soft hammer after to check they are seated
forgot about that step, haha

Don't force it... use a larger hammer.
