    Default W5x Transmission speedo gears

Does anybody know where I can get a speedo gear for a W5x gearbox (I have a W57) with 28 teeth?

I had a 3.42 diff that was stuffed so I replaced it with a 3.89 because that's all I could find at the time and it seems to suit the car better anyway but of course now my speedo is way out.

The standard one is 32 teeth and I've pulled one out of a W58 in an old celica supra only to find that was 32 teeth as well.

Does anybody know where I might be able to get hold of one with 28 teeth, or can suggest another option that doesn't involve spending $250+ to get the guages adjusted?

You need to make sure the plastic gear matches the internal metal gear.

If you found a 32 tooth in the box you have and a 3.42 diff (and assuming everything is factory) then the gear inside the box is a 12 tooth.

To get a gear to match the 12 tooth in the box and a 3.9 diff you'll need a 37 tooth gear.
    These don't exist.

    Other combo's for a 3.9 diff are 28/9, 34/11, or 31/10.

The 32 tooth you got from an MA61 would have been from one with a 3.73 diff. (and as such matched to an 11 toothed inner gear)

At least all the above is according to the speedo gear calculator I have.

    I'm assuming you got 28 teeth from 32 / (3.89 / 3.42) = 28.1 (28 teeth) ?
    This is backwards, it should be 32 / (3.42 / 3.89) = 36.4 (37 teeth)

Crap, your right. Thx, don't know how I stuffed that up. I might just have to keep looking for a 3.42 diff.

Is this a daily car, or a performance car?

    Tough call.

Changing the diff over is easier than pulling the box apart to change a cog.
The 3.9 diff will give better performance too, but use more fuel.

Are you sure you had a 3.42 diff?
Lots of MA61 owners have been looking for them for years, but from memory no one has ever verified their existance.
The 3.58 was very common with the 22RE though, could it be this?

Yeah I'm certain, even have a photo somewhere I think. It's from a 1985 CSi 2.4L Corona chassis code RT142 (live axle), I believe some were assembled in Australia and some in Japan (both locally delivered).

I'm pretty sure the Australian ones have the 3.89 diff and a bw transmission, the Jap ones have a 3.42 diff and W57, at least until they switched to unleaded which happened between late 1985 and mid 1986.

And it wasn't just an odd one out that I have because we bought two new, about 6 months apart in '85.

Ahh, live axle. So a T series?

I was presuming it was an F-series IRS setup.

    I wish it was IRS

I don't know the difference between F series and T series.

I know that the 2.0L 22R engines were in the ST141 and usually badged as Corona CS and the 2.4L 22RE is in the RT142 and usually badged as Corona CSi or Avante, and that some Avante models had IRS.
