So I bodged up some water lines and stuff and took the car for a spin tonight. It felt like it really wanted to go but I had a few dramas with hoses popping off, and the boost gauge kept giving me grief so I didn't want to step on it in case it tried to spool up to 30psi and pop the engine (unknown spring in the eBay wastegate). I was just getting it all sorted when I noticed the charge light on the dash... it seems the alternator chose this moment to shit itself. No more driving until I can source a replacement alternator.
So, who has a spare?

are they anything like a 7m alternator? if so ive got a couple..?
Turbo-A lives here!
7M alternators and 1J alternators share the same guts but differnt casings norbie...if 2J and 1J are the same then a 7M one should suit your needs

Have you taken your existing alternator apart to see what went?
You might just need a set of brushes / regulator...
btw my 2jz has a different plug to my 1jz, not a big deal, just something to mention...
Cheers

The alt is probably just brushes. It's a worthwhile exercise to pull them out and extend the conductor (free - by heating up the solder and pulling the conductor out slightly) or replace them.

Sourced a temporary replacement alternator, car is running again. It turns out the wastegate is set at about 17psi and DAMN is it FAST! Sounds pretty angry with the screamer pipe too.
I pulled the old alternator apart, brushes looked ok but it was full of black sludge thanks to my oil-dripping 2JZ. I degreased it good then bench tested it with a power drill and got a few volts out of it. Would that suggest it's working OK or was my bench test worthless? Obviously it was turning far slower than its normal operating range. I just want to know if it's worth putting it back in for a proper test, or if I should just send it off for a rebuild.

I just connected a multimeter to the big power outlet bolt thing with the negative on the body of the alternator, then spun it as fast as I could and the multimeter read about 2.6v. I didn't understand what the 3 pins on the back were for so I ignored them - I thought that was just something to do with the charge light? I don't understand alternators.

one pin is for the charge light, one is to supply power to generate the field and one is used to determine battery condition.
for a bench test you would need to connect IGN, BATT, alternator body (earth) and something as a load. maybe an old headlight? you would want to test if the alternator can supply current
full charging RPM for the alternator would be about 3000rpm at a rough guess
hello
good stuff, what rpm does it come on at?
does it feel alot laggier?
cheers
