Cheers for all your help
p.s. will it do any damage driving the car with the problem?... the car seems to run exactly as before... its not running in limp mode.

Cheers sounds promising for the interum... anyone else got any input?Originally Posted by 4agte
i had the same thing as 4agte, the knock sensor on my 4agze broke (i knocked the top and moved it), every time i drove it the light came on but it still ran fine,
the only thing i suspect is you won't do any damage to the engine, but if it does knock the ecu will not pick it up and won't go into the preventitive measures to stop it

DTC 52 is open or short in knock sensor number 1 - the one at the front of the engine above the aircon pump.
DTC 55 would have indicated knock sensor number 2 located at the rear above the starter motor which would have made more sense as you were disconnecting the heater hoses very close to it... unless of course the plugs between No 1 and No 2 have been swapped at some point.
Check the wiring from the sensor to the ECU for continuity once unplugged on both ends.
If the wiring from the sensor to the ECU is fine, check the sensor's resistance which should be 1 M Ohm or higher.
If both of these check out OK, consider trial swapping the ECU in case of a dry joint or other fault in your existing one.

Thanks all for you help on this, very much appreciated.
Hmm now that I think about it, a few months ago the starter motor was replaced.... maybe they have bumped the wire and now it has come off.Originally Posted by manny
I will have to check...they may have been swapped around.
is it even possible for the sensor wires to be swapped? I wouldn't have thought the wires to sensor 2 would reach sensor 1.
Don't know, but I will be putting in a big effort to find out tonight after workOriginally Posted by chris davey

Well tried to get to the knock sensors tonight.... basically impossible to get to without taking the inlet manifold off
Next stop, mechanic, not playing around with engine bits... way out of my league.
