Default Help on 2 problems with TA22

Hey all. Hopefully someone will have some ideas for these two problems.

Problem 1. Car will start fine first time but will stall without any throttle input. With throttle the revs will surge up and down maybe 500 rpm. If you put the car in gear and try move, the car will try to stall as if you are trying to take off in 3rd gear instead of first. You can get it going with lots of revs and riding the clutch but even then it bunny hops like it has a L plater driving a manual car for the first time behind the wheel. Engine is a stock 2T.

Car has sat garraged for some time so I am leaning towards a fuel problem. Any other ideas?

Problem 2. Car has excessive steering wheel free play. When the wheel is centered and you turn left it's nice and tight and the car begins to turn immediately. If you turn right the wheel will move about 1/8 of a turn before you get any movement from the wheels. I have replaced every bush and steering component including a brand new steering box. Is there something in the steering column that would wear that can cause this problem? Any other ideas?

    Thanks for any help.

Problem 1- I woud definately say a fuel problem, it sounds like it is running lean. How long has it been sitting, and have you tried fresh fuel? If its been sitting for long enough, the seals/gaskets could have dried out.

Problem 2- the only thing I can think of is the idler arm, apparently TA's have a habit of wearing the pivots.

Thanks for that. I'm also leaning towards a fuel issue as well.

As for the steering. Can't be any of the componants in the steering except for something in the steering column as I have replaced everything whith brand new gear even the steering box.

Maybe try getting someone to rock the steering while you look around for any loose/moving parts. Most steering columns have a uni joint in them near the bottom, I'd look there first.

    Hi,

Yes, the idler and the pitman arms need to be checked and probably replaced 'cos they are getting quite worn on these older cars. Also check and adjust the steering box.

As mentioned, the engine problem sounds like it is running too lean. Check your carby, but also check your leads, dizzy cap, dizzy rotor, plugs and the condensor.

If you let the fuel slowly evapourate in a carby (ie if the car has not been started in months) it can leave a gummy residue which can block and foul some of the channels etc in the carb and the jets. You may need to get a carb rebuild kit, pull apart your car, wash it out (with petrol and carby cleaner) and re-assemble it.

Steering box to chassis bolts nice and tight? If loose, left turn ASAP, right turn your input has to first move the box, then the innards of the box.

    cheers Chuck.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Problem 1 was solved with a half dismantelling of the carby and a good cleaning then fiddling with the mixture screw to get it running smooth again.

Problem 2 was just that the suspension place who installed my new steering componants, while doing a fairly good job on the whole, did not find it necessary to adjust the free play on the steering box. I have tightened it up and now it is much better.
