If the 3RZ uses the same mounting points etc then why not use all your manifolds etc and put a 3RZ in?
Have driven a diesel hiace and they are slow as a wet week, Noisey and did I mention slow.
Really not much info available on these hi aces. cannot even get workshop manuals for them easily.
As far as i know the hilux has a simular engine bay, and driveline setup to the hiace?
My particular hiace has a 600,000km carby fed 2rz motor with a buggered automatic transmission. I am after something with naturally more torque and also convert it to manual.
Ideally a 1uz would be my pick, but i have not heard of this conversion being done before and i suspect the space available is too small for a 1uz.
Turbo motors probably are also not an option as the tight space would make cooling them a nightmare.
The easiest and possibly cheapest option is to drop a hiace/hilux diesel motor into it.
Would this require changing the fuel lines, tank etc over? do i need to change over motormounts/crossmeber etc for this swap?
Has anyone got any info with the hiace or conversion info?

The 3rz is from the prado correct? wonder what sort of power difference there is between the 2rz and 3rz.
The diesel's are that bad hey? i know they are ultra reliable but i would of thought they had a decent amount of torque.
So for the easiest conversion it would seem a 3rz to replace an old 2rz is the way to go.

if Hi-ace (Ray) could do it, so can you, but with a Toyota engine... 1MZ/3MZ-FE (3.0L/3.3L V6), blown if you choose too... is that an option for you? 1MZ is from the Camry and 3MZ is from the Kluger.
Thanx for that MJH, I wont worry about converting to a the diesel. The 3rz looks like a decent motor to transplant, any ideas if the supra w58 bolts up to them? i heard the w58's are very identicle to the hilux/hiace gearboxes.
Andrew162 Thats interesting, isnt the 1mz and 3mz in a fwd configuration? This sounds pretty interesting conversion. What else can u tell me about this conversion? Not a simply bolt in conversion i wouldnt think.
First i was curious to see if there were any decent bolt in options as far as toyota interchangabilty goes. (theoreticallly most of those hilux conversions should work with the hiace).

Ah i found rays hiace, thats alot more extreme then i was planning lol. I like what he has done tho.
I feel so alienated with this 1990 hiace lol usually there is a bunch of modders for every toyota car on these forums.

welcome to my world... I think I'm still the only one on here that did the whole shebang on a RAV4.
Ray's Hi-ace was powered by a blown Commy VP motor (3.8L V6), sounded great and it really hauled. yes you're right about the FWD config design of these MZ series engines, but I just thought I'd throw it out there to see if it would be feasible for your conversion. it's not a bolt-in conversion, no... but at a guess another RZ-series engine could probably help you out. what's the standard engine displacement on your Hi-ace?
1uz conversion has been done a few times, it fits, but i dont know how easy
i know of at least 3 over here!
personally i think its stupid unless you redo the front suspension and have an LSD.

The 2rz is the baby of the 3rz its an injected 2.4l 4 banger.. not carby..so you dont have a 2rz in it now, it would be a 22r or whatever there called. the only real differences between the 2rz and 3rz is obviously the displacment and the 2rz doesnt have balance rods other than that there the same block, same mounts etc etc.
1j has been done several times, also boosted 22re's etc. There should be a bit of info around on various forums.

carb 2rz are definately an option in australia and are fitted to most hiaces from about 89-99 where they changed to a 2rz-e
