possibly a gze might be better for an auto i.e. aw11 gze auto
G'day all.
I know very little about corollas. I know even less about the 4a's and I know nothing about the 20V's.
But, we have a AE101r corolla with the standard 4afe in it, and I've figured that maybe it'd be a good idea and a reasonably reliable+simplish swap to put a 4AGE 20V in it.
So, I have a few questions, firstly a general one which is; How hard is it to do? and secondly, the following:
A) Electronics. Are the looms the same? Can I just plug and play ECU's? Do I need to worry about ECU's at all?
B) this HAS to stay auto. Will the 4afe auto plug into the 4age? It looks like they came with a slightly different part number (4afe auto vs 4age auto) but I suspect that may have been for the internals. If I can't get a 20V with an auto behind it, this may have to be an option.
C) Is it pretty much a mount swap job only?
D) What's a reasonable price for a 20V engine, maybe plus loom and auto..?
Think that'll do for now, I guess it's a good start.

what i know about 20v swaps and how i answer your questions....
A) looms will be different, some plugs and sensors may come over easy but you will have to work the two looms into one. and yes ecu's matter. you will need a 20valve auto ecu
B) assuming your talking about the transmission you need not worry it will fit. all 4a blocks are the same when it comes to the rear of the engine and tranny mounts. you may have an issue with the flywheel fitting into the bellhousing but i cannot confirm this. if you get a 20v with an automatic transmission then you can swap engine and tranny with minimal modification.
C) since your taking an ae101 engine and changing for another ae101 engine you might not have to even worry about the mounts they could(or should) be the same.
D) im not sure what would be reasonable but i can tell you that i paid $1500 (thats in canadian dollars) two years ago for a COMPLETE engine and tranny it was a silver top and i needed nothing extra it had the loom, ecu, exhaust, afm... everything. that was also a delivered to my garage price. looking back it may have been a little high but i did get my pick of the 6 that were in stock (pics via email) and got a VERY clean specimen.

Yep, very simple swap.
a) Electronics: quite straightforward, looms won't be cross compatible, but they'll be pretty close. Plugs should be the same, and there will only be a few wires to be changed over, due to a few different sensors. There's a wiring guide available, i doubt there'd be much difference between ae92 and ae101 4afe's looms.
b) 4afe auto will bolt up, i think the flywheel will fit. Easier to just get an auto 20V package, they exist (more plentiful than you'd think actually) and will be a cheaper option anyway (than teh manual).
c) Mount job? It'll use the same mounts, even into the ae92 there's only one mount different. If you get the secondarys with it that'll just about bolt up to the cat (flange might be different but i reckon it's a good chance)
d) No idea on priceI got mine a while back, and in stages, but the prices mentioned seem about right, i wouldn't pay any more than that, and i'd expect an auto package to be cheaper. Shop around a few of the importers, there's a list around here somewhere...
