Most 1j's and 7m come from Japan with 88 degree thermostats. Your friendly Toyota dealer should be able to get an 82 degree on to suit.
hey guys... im a bit of a newb when it comes to 1J's... im used to my 80 degree SR20 thermostat, but my 1J seems to have a 90degre thermostat???? - or there abouts... is this normal? r there any "cooler" thermostats available?
im not sure if it matters, but the engine has 264/272 cams, cam gears, GT35R, injectors, so it makes some heat..

Beige.... The new Black!!!
i got one from toyota just the other day, same one used in the prius, quite sure it was an 82C, but probably an 88C will have to double check.
sweet. thanks guys.. given the oil cooler, intercooler and radiator setup that i have, i want to do everything i can to ensure the donk doesnt cook itself.
cheers
I thought we worked out last time that it started to open at 82 and fully open by 92. The 1j runs pretty warm
yeah, it doesnt go above 90, but at the same time, i like to keep as far from 100 as i can.. the engine has also been without water/coolant for about 9 months during the conversion, so i might just change the thermostat anyway...
Mine sits at 83deg on the highway. Similar setup to you except stock cams, different turbo, chaser radiator. Gets warm quick when I slow down though.
Isn't the temp stamped on the thermostat?
It is on the ones I put in the 1G 9toyota ones that is)

hmm, cant say i've looked that closely at it.. will check it out tonight..
5m, 7m etc all use a 88" opening...from memory 1jZ's are meant to run at 95"c whereas 7m's etc are at 90"C
Looking at the part numbers and specs...
P/N 9091603093 - 2JZ - 82 to 95 degrees...
P/N 9091603125 - 1JZ - 82 to 95 degrees...
thanks heaps for the reply's guys... much appreciated !!!
on the topic of 1J thermostats...does anyone know where you can get cooler ones?
i.e. around the vicinity of 70-75 degrees?
I know they arent meant too run that cold but I am suffering with the problem that when out on the track if its sitting at 90 degrees while waiting to be flagged off to start drifting I am hitting 120 degrees rather quickly (i.e. 2-3 laps) and it can hamper my ability to get some decent practise in in the morning sessions before a competition...
if the temp was sitting on around 75 degrees before I take off then I would be able to get another 2-3 laps in, which would be about right as I would most likely need to change tyres before then anyway...
do TRD make different thermostats for the 1J?
Also bear in mind this car is not a road car anymore so sitting on the highway running too cool isnt going to be an issue![]()

I am sure that last time we talked about this on the old forums someone was going to use a 72 opening and 82 full open TRD thermostat for the 1jz so they must make them. I don't really know where you can get TRD stuff from though?
i have tried to get a cooler one, my flat mate works at toyota in spare parts, and he says they do not exist after searching for 6 months.
82 is it.
you could try drilling holes in it.
