I don't think it's possible to put the backing plate on backwards. It would have to be almost flat to allow that... and it's not. We did think that what you were suggesting was a possibilty but it was very quickly discounted after having a look at it.

    Hi,

is it possible that the adjustable plate has been bolted to the wrong side of the cam gear? Maybe the gear bolting face is offset and some noob put it on the wrong side in the factory???

EDIT!!! by the looks of the degrees marked at the top of the gear probably not!

Yeah, and the massive recess in the grey section to receive the blue bit would suggest that it's on the correct side. The gear looks properly made and assembled... as does the car.

My guess is that it's the wrong gear and it's meant for a 4A or some other engine that has minor differences in how the gear is mounted to the camshaft.

    Hi,

Will the valves interfere with one another in the 1j?? If so it could've been very expensive. I'd just be going back with photos and telling them you want your money back and go somewhere else.

I would have been out for blood if i had to pull the head off the 1J. The whole point of spending money on the 1J conversion was so i didn't have to worry about heads and headgaskets anymore. I'm pretty pissed off with the whole situation as it is.

Grind the bolt down or replace it with a dome cap screw?

Hey roadkill, I had your avitar as my desktop for a while, it's a sweet pic.

Can anyone confirm that a 2JZ and 1JZ cam gear are the same? Are there any engine variants that have a different gear?

Slim, it really sounds like they sold you the wrong gear. Good luck with getting your money back or store credit. Don't give in to them no matter how long they screw you around. They'll eventually give you what you want just to get rid of you.

i have the trust cam gears aswell, i had the same problem and no longer run the backing plate.

i think the trust ones have been designed around the 2j backing plate, the 1j backing plate must be different.

WTF! I'm pretty sure that we aren't the first people to put one of these gears on a 1J and if the only way they can be used is to remove the timing belt cover then that's fucking fucked.

Reading this thread I am glad I bought the OS Giken ones, because I was an inch away from getting the GReddy ones at one stage.

How did the OS Giken one fit? Is it a nice little piece of kit? When the Autobarn guy gets back to me i'll be telling him that i want a different gear or my money back so i can buy one elsewhere. I still don't like the look of the Fidanza ones so i'm open to other suggestions. The HKS ones look nice but i haven't heard any reports from 1J owners so it may be a risk to get one of those.

I actually picked them up from the post office at lunch time today so they are yet to be installed. I don't have a place to work on my car here but I should be able to arrange something in the next couple of weeks to put them in myself.

I got them off ebay for $120 each and they look quite similar to the GReddy ones. I did the 'eyeball' test looking at the back of these and the image you posted and it *looks* as though the spokes are more inset from the edge on the inside.

As for the HKS ones, I have heard that the ones with blue anodizing (older ones) on the teeth will wear out your belt more quickly due to being a sharper/harder tooth design.

Will let you know how I go with them.
