cant say i have heard of this![]()
Hi people, I'm just about to start putting back together my 4agte and have been searching around for all the little tips and tricks to make things a little easier. One thing that I came across was the term "flatplating" for the oil pick-up. I was just wondering what the process is for this as oil supply is kind of important apparently![]()
Thanks Dan

Yeah, I came across it in "the guide" and the guy seemed pretty adamant that it should be done, I've never heard of it either, wondering how it's done/what's involved. I don't think my motor has the locating dowel/protrusion he's talking about.

perhaps the flatplating they are referring to is for grinding the housing of the oil pump, so that the mating faces are "true" and don't leak.
ie, plate of glass with 1200grit or whatever, and carefully make the surface flat (although that is not as easy as it sounds)

ha is that what they meen I do that every job i get anyway, do it in figure 8's
you get your oil pump cover remove the plate holding in the pump get a plate off glass some fine grit wet n dry, spray lube and work in in figure 8 to get a total smooth finish and the gear and so forth.
yeh dont play with side clearance as you can do worse than good.

i dont have a funny or cool signature.
get a plate of glass (i usually use an A4ish sized one).. then get wet n dry paper (fine is ok, as alloy is soft).Originally Posted by 30psi 4agte
have RUNNING WATER going over it.
then get the oil pump, split it, and the mating faces, you grind down so they are parallel and will seal better. or so the theory goes.
you can also do the gears to set the side clearances between the gear and housing, but getting stuff parallel and properly flat (not engineeringly flat) is a real pain in da butt.

yeah found it in the end stu............... christ im going blind![]()
And like fixer said ......I do that anyway without even thinking about it but it is something for people who dont build motors all the time to lookout for !

That's awesome guy's, I've built a couple of motors but only fairly standard stuff and have learnt a lot a long the way, I wish I knew about this site back then. It's nice to know that when you get stuck with something or need some inspiration there's usually someone to help![]()

he's talking about the oil pick up, not the pump, u do the same as stu has said but u grab the pick up and to do it to the face that meets the pump/block/whatever, use 240 grit with CRC, used to do it all the time as they warp

Thanks mate, I assumed that you could use the same technique for all the sealing surfaces, water and oil?

Hey, I done the pump and the pick-up today. The pump wasn't that bad only took a small amount of sanding to get it flat, but the pick-up was pretty bad and took quite a bit to get it nice and flat. Well worth the little extra time and effort.
Thanks for the help guys
