Filling gearbox with trans' oil... a faster way?

Hi,
I went and checked the level of oil in my gearbox today (its a standard 1975 ta22 item, not sure of the name of it t50, w50?) and as i thought it was pretty damb low. In the toyota manual i have it specifies to refill the gearbox through the filler hole with a syringe... is there any other faster way of doing this, the oil is pretty thick and it seems like i'd be there all day? The angle and position of the hole mean i cant just go ahead and pour in the new oil, any ideas?

mechanics have a cool pump-type thingy that squirts it in there... if you have a local mechanic who you're friendly with, they'll usually do it for extremely cheap.

Gear oil comes in litre containers with a short piece of hose clipped to the side that you screw on instead of the lid. Stick the hose in the gearbox level hole and either hold the container upside down above the gearbox or if this can't be done squeeze the shit out of the container and force the oil out the hose.

Alternatively you can take the shifter out and put the required amount of oil in and use the filler hole to check you have put enough in. Much easier.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm not exactly friendly with my mechanic but i guess now might be the time to start. I bought the oil today and i was expecting some type of hose like you said to pop out when i opened the lid but its just a normal cap and bottle opening... i spose thats what you get for when u go for one of the cheaper bottles

This is what we've done on Ed's (shelldrake's) car everytime we pull the box off to fix his clutch. So we've done it a few times...

Are you sure you have the right type of oil then?

Oh and you'll have a T50 with a T series diff and a T series engine...

Hmmm shifter removal it is then! After i remove the shifter assembly that has the ball with the nylon bush thing around it (yes that is the technical term for it lol) is it just a matter of pouring the oil down or is there anything else i may need to remove? The oil is API GL-5 80W/90 Gear oil..

if you have some silicon hose handy, slip this over the top of the little tube, run it thru the engine bay into the box, then put a clamp on the bottle to force it out.

alternatively, sit the bottle in hot water for a while to get it moving a bit

and if you dont have silicon hose handy, just use the little pipe, fiddle it into the box and put a clamp on it. amazingly quick. brilliant for diffs.

I've never had any luck with those hand pump things, the little hose on the oil bottle is good if you have enough room to get the bottle up to the right angle.

The absolute best set-up is the mechanics oil can pump, with a metal nozzle with trigger valve, but of these are a large plunger pump inside a 20 litre drum. Great if you're doing gearboxes all day, but a waste for at home, since you can't get the last 1.5 to 2 litres of oil out.

A great compromise is to use some 6-10mm PVC tubing. Stick one end in the gearbox, and a plastic funnel in the other end.
Stand next to the car and hold the funnel up and pour the oil in.
It works better if you have two people, one to pour and one to check the level.

Use compressed air to gently blow the residual oil through the hose (hold the air blower back from the funnel opening and the oil will be blown through. Jam the air hose in there and oil will go everywere)

I've done 2 or 3 with this method, and it's very easy to get exactly the right amount in the box, and if you hang the tube up to drain what little is left inside the tube back into the bottle, you don't waste any.
