Default Installing an adjustable cam gear on a 1J

i just got my adjustable cam gear today, whats involved in the installation, i heard that someone worked out a way to do it without gutting the front of the motor.

1 thing i could never wrap my head around was which was to turn a gear/cam to retard/advance it, so could someone who has their exh wheel 6 degrees retarded {looking at u braden} please take a snap of it

can u take the front timing cover off without taking off the balancer

better off pulling everything apart to be sure the timing is correct.
if you try to do it without removing the tensioner it could slip and give you all sorts of grief.
post a pic of the gear.
the outer should rotate clockwise to retard the cam.
    cheers

Get a 24mm or 22mm (I forget which) socket and rotate the engine/harmonic balancer so that the cam gears have their marks pointing vertical (0°).

Loosen the bolt that holds the cam gear on (17mm I think)

Unbolt the hydraulic ram/tensioner piston down near the alternator (but do not remove it entirely!)

Slide the old cam gear off and put the new one on, making sure it is set on zero before doing so, and make sure both cam gears are still pointing straight up (0°).

Slide the cam gear bolt in and tighten the tensioner piston

Tighten up the cam gear bolt
I was going to do it that way.

That'd work. Tho you still need to remove a bunc of stuff up front to get to it. Radiator etc. Just saves you removing the balancer and pining the tensioner.

Basicaly it the same as doing a timing belt to give you an idea of the work amount.

I'll have to take a pic when I have time to remove the timing belt cover, got the old man visiting until the weekend which kills my time
When I was on the dyno I initially sent it to 4 degrees advance accidentally, and lost a heap of power. If you are doing this at home instead of on a dyno, you'll notice it when you go for a drive, simply wind it back the other way. You won't break anything

not on my car. Just top rad hose to come off. Since I have less room than most I would have thought it would be the same unless they have hydro fan setup still.

You coud possibly get around it by accessing every thing from bellow while on stands in the sup but I find it easier to get it from the top. Only takes a few minutes to remove the radiator any hoo. OH and I think you have to remove the altenator to get to the rear tensioner bolt. You could maybe get around it but when I did it on my mates supra on the weekend it made more sense to just remove it.

IIRC the soarers have the altenator on the opposite side tho yeah? I remember somthing about powersteering leaks killing altenators, or is that the 1uz?
