    You wont get an accurate tension any other way.

    Im not talking completely undoing nut ........ just approx 1/4 of a turn.

    I have done this for years and never had any probs. Id rather do it this way than just checking if the nut is tight......... That wont work.

    I know of blokes who have had heads off and re-used their MHG , so i cant see backing it off alittle causing any probs.

    You will with ARP head studs, have only ever done it that way and ARP will tell you that if you call and ask. Steel HGs are like torque to yield head bolts, they compress once and that's it...loose tension by backing off and you run a real risk of leaks.

    A steel HG with ARP head studs won't loose tension like a normal gasket and head bolt therefore you don't need to retorque.
