Default Problem with paseo low idle and hesitation when free reving

    Hi all

just looking for a car for my girlfriend.

We looked at a paseo (yeah i know dont start) and it seemed fine EXCEPT

when started from cold it idled quite low, didnt stall but ran a little rough. it started around 500rpm and slowly made it up to 1100 or so. Once it had warmed up it idled fine.

secondly when you put you food down to free rev the engine there was a distinct hesitation about half a second before the revs would climb.

With my limited knowledge of efi i thought it may be a faulty EGR valve or a vacume leak.

The motor pulled well through the rev range, in all gears, didnt blow any smoke, no signs of burnt oil, cooling system was in excellent condition.

can anyone give me any other suggestions? It didnt seem like a major problem because the car drove so well.

    any help would be appreciated

    Cheers

    Daniel.

Could quite possilbly be a bhg or cracked head.. my celica idled rough for the 1st 5-10 seconds when started cold then smoothed out.. it was water in one of the cylinders.. if you want to test it wait till the car is cold, pull the plugs out, put some cardboard over the holes and crank it over.. if there is moisture on the cardboard you have a water getting into the cylinders.. you could also get a tk test as well

gunked-up aix-air valve so it doesn't idle fast enough hwen cold

air leak might be the stumble - or maybe it's just that it's an economy motor that's always strangled for air and fuel?

omg wtf bbq, dont cars have fuel in the cylinders too!?!?!??!one!!!11!1!dot!!!four.

sounds like it needs new plugs.

timing may be a bit off (not smart enough to tell whether its too retarded/advanced).

could very possibly be a vac leak as well, they do all sorts of funny shit when the sensors take the wrong readings, if its an AFM car id be looking there first, as they usually run shitty at idle, and good when running the car under load (because the leak leans the motor out, so it pulls better)
