    Default 4agze alternator not charging

Ive got an aw11 4agze mounted into my 71 and the alternater is not charging AT ALL. In fact theres nothing coming out of the alt while running except the battery voltage. This particular setup used to have an ic regulater on the loom which we cut off and ran the wires thru the orginal regulater. Does anyone have any experiance with this setup? Theres also the possiblility that the alt is fubar as the motor is a jap import.

still uses a 3 pin plug but differnet colored wires (white, pink and blue.)

Looking at changing over to a more normal 4age alt as this is starting to shit me

The three wires are ignition, charge sense and the dash lamp. Most common problem with a conversion and non-charging alternator is the charge lamp wire not connected.

    See this article: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h8.pdf

Also, the pinout for the alternator should be on the Denso sticker on the alternator case

can you not just use the regulator that was on the loom?

Im very sure that a normal 4age alternator is very different in the front housing and wont align up properly with the pulleys. I had to try and source a 4agze alt (late last year) with no luck. Your alt should also have an ic reg built in.

^ AE93SX on twincam.info has 2 4agze alternators for same, both plug types...

Alternatively you can checkout my rebuild thread. (Almost ready to pull it apart.)
    http://www.twincam.info/index.php?showtopic=27898

The standard regulator on a 4agze alternator is screwed to the back of the alternator under the rear cover of the unit (refer to my thread for pics).

Can you take pics of your setup?

I have reliable information that this alternator does not have a regulator built in. Sam who wired up say it doesnt, the sticker says it doesnt and we cut an ic regultor out of the loom so yair.....strange.

Yes im awared that the housings are differnt (something to do with which side of the motor its mounted on).

Blur - what did you end up doing?

sorry no pics, computer is fooked.

Ive just done some light reading on the autoshop site and it states "the windings of the stator generate voltage anytime the rotor is energised and spinnig"

does anyone know how the heck i can energise the rotor OR which wire is power to and from the windings?

oh and +1 repage for you guys helping so far, this subject is the only thing holding me back from some sexy times!

That document is what I used to diagnose my faulty rectifier, the stator and rotor checked out ok, the brushes were on the low side.

Interesting that it doesn't have an internal regulator!

How many wires does your alternator have?

One bolt down spot and three other wires?

If so thats an internally regulated Alt.

    Ignition
    Charge Lamp
    Voltage Sense

If you can confirm this, ill let you know which wires do what.

If you only have two wires on the plug than you'll need an external regulator.

Look like this? If so the crusty heatsink is attached to the regulator. Infact the regulator is what the loom plugs into, along with the bolt on terminal attached to the rectifier.
    Hope it helps.

If you need to rebuild, Ashdown Ingram supply the bits to rebuild Denso alternators. I got the regulator, rectifier, brush holder and bearings for $150.

    Hi Biggo,
4AGZE's from AW11 have an external regulator. It is called an ICT of the top of my head. The wiring diagram calls it a "voltage regulator".

There is a white-black, green and black wires from your alternator that go to the external regulator (from the AW11 wiring diagram I used). There is also a white wire from your alternator that splices directly to a white wire from the external alternator. This then goes to the battery (amongst other things).

Not much use in your current situation, but you'll have to either install a new alternator with internal regulator, or go path of least resistance and install an external regulator.

    Cheers

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.

throw it away and put a universal bosch alt on, i put a 120amp one onto the feral (extra cost you may not want though...). i would have to have a look at the original plug as i cannot remmeber the wire i plugged it into to turn off the idiot lights when it is chargeing (think it was green). triggered/excited it from the starter motor and ran a new 8 guage charge wire to the battery.

feral - id assume the universal alternators will fit the toyota mounts? Ive spoken to an auto lecky and he was of the opinion of getting another alternator aswell. And being a bosch stocklist.....

valkryie - your spot on mate, the otherside of the plug is as you stated.

so the 2 options im thiking are:

    1. find an alternator that sits on the exhaust side of the motor ie camry/corolla

    2. see if i can get my regulator back. I dont rat my chances tho heh.

when i put it on the 4agze i made a simple braket for the top mount and it fitted on the lower one. i can take a pic of the alt mounting braket today if you want? i am taking it off the feral's 4agte today and putting it onto the lil feral's 4agze.
i only had to source a ribbed pulley for it, got a crummydore one from the wreckers.
