5sfe 1990 toyota celica POD filter fitting. wierd bitz on air intake tube.. :S

HI guys... its me. I got some photos too i promised ages ago. the suspension has just passed its 1000k's since its last drive outta the workshop, (THANK GOD)! Thanx to all those u supported me through. good on ya guys [I still owe those MANY drinks!]

But heres a new jiffy.

PROBLEM:

1. What is that empty plastic canister that mounts onto the side of the air intake tube? all its got is numbers on it, and when i took it off, it has nothing inside. its a void. do i need that? Its not in the diagrams for the 5sfe in the hynes manual. (although we all know how crap that book is!) IF i don't need it, then it makes my life easier

2. The air sensor. There were adapters that i saw that allow it to mount to what would either be the air filter or the air intake tube... but i am completely baffled on this one. i know where my air sensor is and how it just pushes in and sits with a rubber grommet... but its not positioned on any component thats in line with the airbox and intake tube... its mounted on that actual airbox itself! (is this normal?!!! The guy at super cheap i was talking to owned a same yr GT4, and his didn't have the same setup, although GT4's are vastly different in alot of ways to the standard 5sfe SX model) How do i go about mounting this securely to the intake tube if i am going to eliminate the airbox (to swap for a pod filter). I would imagine it would have to be air tight so that no unfiltered air can sneek through.

3. My air intake tube has aged and developed ALOT of cracks in the bumpy kinda corrogated part from age and wear. I have so far temporarily sealed it up with strong material tape until i get a new one. However, rather than buying an expensive new toyota genuine tube to replace it, can anyone recommend any cheap but good wide diameter universal intake tubing (with internal springs so it don't collapse and choke itself lol. 2nd hand ones from the wreckers are goin to be no good cause they would be the same age and would have been exposed to engine vibration and changing temperatures as well.

I been doing plenty of research on pod filters. The intake sound is a very noice turn on. Some people say they don't do anything extra for performance, others say they do. on carbied cars in particular, i have noticed easily the difference a simple airfilter comparison can make when it comes to 'breathability' ... so to speak.

I had a look at some prices this evenin for some good quality reusable pod filters. K&N would be a good focus, noice reputable brand. $75 (otherwise i can get an $8 one... but sparing bux would probably leave me with bad air quality in the engine, which is gonna leave a financial dint when it affects my motor.

I have had a good discussion with pod users about legalities, especially mounting options, so that should be sweet.

Cold air intake is another thing i been looking into, there is a tube that brings cold air into the stock air box anyway, i can just leave that there, and in time, fit a gt4 celica bonnet and the side grills will bring even more cold air in.

I think i have it all thought out in regards to what to look out for. even looked at some part articles in this forum (thought i should before i ask, cause people don't like repeating themselfs lol)... its just the structure of putting it together in my type of vehicle that has me scratchin my head.

pod filter's with a CAI (cold air intake) you probably wont see any real noticeable performance gains but it does help the engine to "breath" a bit better and you'll kinda notice that during acceleration.

i wouldn't really bother with the GT4 bonnet scoop and vents if your looking at it from a performance point of view. if your already using the cold air setup thats there. its not really going to be sucking the air in the engine bay anyway so those vents are gonna be kinda useless for that fact.

ease to breathe would result in faster acceleration wouldn't it? and smoother running?

1. that canister is a vacuum thing.. toyota seemed it fit to use up plastic and create that void to maintain their intake flow and volume.. you don't really need it and blocking it off won't do much for performance..

2. the item u're talking about is an air temp sensor.. you can fit it in the CAI piping by drilling a hole the exact same size as the hole in your stock air box, and use the rubber gasket thingo where the sensor sits... just pull the rubber bit off, stick it in your cai piping and plug sensor in, and viola..

3. i went to super cheap auto, bought some memory flex tubing which i used to bend around and re-create the original plastic piping which i found was degraded and sucking air from the wrong places.. you can use that as well, as it's barely 20 or 30 bucks from memory.. it's really flexible and a good design, although old and very "toy-ish" but yea, i cut off what i needed adn sold the rest

You won't get significant gains from a CAI or a pod filter

A pod filter will suck in hotter air from the engine bay unless it's properly boxed, and will a POD have a greater surface area than your standard panel filter? probably not

a CAI setup may help a little, but bear in mind factory air boxes are pretty well designed.. you may end up driving through a puddle and sucking in a bunch of water for merely a placebo effect that your car is running better

end of the day it's still a stock engine that's NA, a filter and CAI is going to do very little if anything for it

and no ease to breathe won't result in faster acceleration or better running, the engine is limited by the valves and flow of the head as to how well it will breathe

1. resonance chamber. quietens/cancels some of the intake noise. can leave it or take it off, makes little difference.

Toyota call it an air intake resonator/chamber. some Toyota's have one of these, others have more, it depends on what kind of engine and air intake is being used, but it's used to quieten the induction 'roar'.

the air temp sensor grommett can be removed from the airbox, and by you drilling a precise 20mm hole, it can be re-fitted into the new air intake tube.

I had a similar type tube as Vios did, except I got mine from Revolution Racegear a LONG time before Supercheap started selling similarly-made (and far cheaper) hoses and ducts. I have some of this left over too, which I plan to use on my 162 once the Gen3 3S-GE has gone in.

you can't go wrong with a K&N pod filter and a recharge kit. once every 10k (or 20k can't remember) km's or whenever the filter loses it's pinky colour is when it's time to clean and respray the filter. they do provide a LOT more intake roar and a big hiss especially when the motor is cold. once it's been running for a couple of minutes the hiss settles down. give the pedal a bit of a poke and you'll hear a brief hiss, followed by a throaty roar after it. this is because you don't have the stock intake resonators/chambers (those black empty canister mounts), just the lovely meaty flavour of raw air intake. in winter it's not as much of an issue, but you want the air to be cool. good ducting placement for summertime will be essential for cooler air intake.

i bought a $12 cheapo filter, wouldnt spend a cent more.

its a filter, as long as it stops the larger, solid particles, its all good, doesnt matter if a fibre or two goes into your motor, it isnt gonna cause any problem at all.

but then again, i have turbo whistle, so i want more noise and less filter action

as has been said earlier, you won't gain hp from a different intake, but doing an intake AND and exhaust mod will make it breathe easier and less-restricted. but with that, you have to take into consideration the noise by-product, and keep it at an acceptable level.
