The problem with an E153 box will be finding the driveshafts, they're a bit hard to come by (as are the boxes).. and note the E153 boxes are worth a small fortune (and that's IF you can find one)

If you want LSD maybe look into getting an E154 (GT4 box) and modifying it to disable the rear transfer casing (st165 and st185 variants of these should be easy enough to come by and not cost too much).

If you're just looking for an easy box to slip in as a replacement with better ratios and no more fiddling around to it, and something that doesn't won't cost you too much to obtain, go for an S54, but hunt around for one with better ratios to suit your need (they are out there!)

I know it would bolt in no worries, speedo drive is electronic on them (I think?) but you can just swap that with the speedo drive off your old gearbox, gear ratios I'm not sure on, but I do think by memory those boxes have double syncros.

Search around the net and you'll find something on the different variants of s54's with info on the gear ratios etc, I've seen it around before.. just not sure exactly where

chitown, after doing a brief Google, I've found out that the ST202 LSD box you were inquiring about earlier is an E56 box. from what I know of, these are not easy to get.

Dale the E154 boxes weren't all LSD. I had the ST205 trans in my old RAV and it was paired with various ST185 components, but no LSD to be found. I searched everywhere for it.

cant find two pieces of information that are the same at the moment. ive been looking everywhere for a comparrison between the s54 boxes but i cant find anything. more confused then where i started. can anyone find a comparrison between the stock st184 box and the 95 camry box?

as Dale said there's variations of S54 boxes around, some with different ratios than others. the info conflicts because various cars were brought out with various transmissions, some coded the same but with different ratios, optional LSD's, etc. and it's likely (being Toyota) that finding one which meets the same ratios and mountings as the next is going to prove difficult.

S54 box comes from MR2 (SW20, linkages reversed), ST184 Celica (5th Gen with 2.2L donk) and a variant of Camry.

according to this thread, E153's definitely came from the V6 variant of the Camry (1MZ-FE engine). although there seems to be just as much confusion in this thread as well.

anything manual with a 5s-fe has a s54 box in it. so you can get it from camry's, st204 celicas, st184 celicas. sw20 NA have s54 too, so you can grab them but you may need to swap the shift linkages around. there's a thread on how to do that by buck_naked around here somewhere.

all V6 gear box's were e153. so that means the camry's with 1mz-fe, and 3vz-fe both had e153. verified as i've had two camry's of both variants together both with same box.

e56 might be the gorilla box that andy told me about, however thats not indicative of it being LSD or not. Rob here as an s54 off a beams that is lsd, and i've got one off a beams st202 with superstruts and it too is a s54. i'm not sure if mine is LSD or not but i'll find out one day

chitown, if you're just after a box to drop in, just grab a camry box and you'll be fine. but you want a different final ratio, and for that you might need to grab a sw20 box and swap linkages.

The difference is pretty obvious - adrian has a camry box behind his 3SGE, when i accelerate next to him off the mark up to 80km/h (changing gears at the redline) he's in 3rd gear while i'm still in 2nd.

let's see.... Camry box + 3S-GE + redline gear changes = shorter time between shifts = shorter final drive (bigger number, like 4.1:1).... = winnah!
