Well... Changing to an electric fuel pump is a piece of piss, and you'll probably thank yourself for it eventually. And if you leave it sitting for a week, no more cranking to wait for the thing to prime!
Have you had a look at the cam on the aux shaft? There could be a good reason for it breaking. Also, you don't need to persist with 30 yo pumps. You can buy brand new ones from Fuel Miser. $85, PN FPM-019A. But if there is something wrong with the aux shaft, I don't suppose destroying a brand new pump would be fun.
