search around mate. search the ra40's in the members ride and the members rides in the old toymods forums. 18rg and 1ggte are the most popular.
just wondering,
i was looking at taking on my mates ra 40 celica with the 18R in it,
what kind of other motors are a direct bolt into these celica's?
or even ones with minor modification,
also wondering, does anyone out there know if it would be possible to mod plate it for a holden 253 v8 motor? cause i have a few lying around,
any help would be much appreciated,
cheers

18R-G is by far the easiest and cheapest and once the carbs are tuned right will hold its own with any stock 253. and you don't need to much in the way of other modifications to keep engineers happy, putiing in a V8 for road use is near impossible (in NSW at least) and the brakes and front suspension would need to be revised as well as the diff if you wanted a skidds machine.
The 18R-G being essentially the same engine as the stock 18R-C but with a twin cam head can be swapped in a day by someone with mechanical skill.

they would probably be as cheap if not cheaper than a 253 conversion.

Probably. It would also be possible to give yourself cancer. I don't recommend either of those.Originally Posted by sriver killer

the price of the conversion isnt just the cost of the engine.
with the 253 your looking at custom gearbox, tailshaft, diff, radiator, exhaust, wiring, springs, brakes etc
the amount of things you will need to buy for the 253 will end up costing more then a 18RG.
a 1ggte would cost the same amout as a 253 conversion in the end yet performe better in ever possible way
hello
an 18rg would be a bolt up conversion right? clutch and exhaust manifold bolt from the 18rc onto the 18rg?
would i need a mod plate?
technically, if you went for the EFI version of the 18RGUE, then you would need a blue plate for queensland (change in induction) but it's not a big technical challenge.
search the site for RA40 and you'll probably find.
You could also mimick what people do with 18RGs into an RA23 or RA28 as have the same features (18RC engine, W50 gearbox, non-EFI fuel tank)
Exhaust manifold wont bolt up, you'll need an 18R-G manifold or a set of extractors, but that set of exractors or manifold will come out at the same spot as your current exhaust, so it's a piece of piss to rejoin...
