Help me identify my clutch! :)

Well I thought my clutch died but I've managed to get it going again. Its safe to say tho, that I either need a new one or rebuild the one I have. The current clutch was in their since before I had the car and I never got told what it was.

Anyway here's a pic of the clutch through the cover, what do you think it is?





Its in a JZA70 (1JZ - R154). By the colour and shape I was thinking exedy hyper single... What do you guys think?

thats just the pressure plate, impossible to say without seeing the clutch plate, go and see a clutch shop and theyll make you one up if theres not one off the shelf to hold up to your power level.

how does it bite
hows the pedal feel
etc etc will help identify what sought of plate it is

Yeah I was hoping the pressure plate might look familiar to someone. The coloring is the same/similar to the exedy. Which is why I thought it might be the hyper single. That and the fact that it appears to be only a single plate. Although the pics of the exedy clutches look extremely shiny, like they could be anodised, where mine appears to be painted.

The feel is: Engagement is high on the pedal/release. Has a very on off feel. Doesn't seem to slip/easy on much if any at all. Tho I haven't driven a 100% on/off to know if mine is the same, but thats how it feels to me! lol

Actualy it feels abit like my folks 100 series landcruiser, but a bit harder and buttony. If that makes any sense.

Some clutch shops paint them, the guy who makes my clutchs paints the pressure plate i dont know why haha. Mine is exedy and is red and is a 5puck plate, my old clutch was a full face and was red also so it blows that idea out of the water.

How did you get it going again just bleed it?

So why do you need a new one?

I was defected just recently so I had to chage every thing back to stock and get an RWC. The mechanic wouldn't pass it with the clutch as is cos it was too high and on/off. SO I just adjusted all the free play out and the took it back and 'reasoned' with him that I needed a heavy duty clutch to support the power and if you know how to drive it, it's fine. (That mech was a total tool, but the only joint open to do an RWC )

Anyway he passed me. I beleive that in my enthusiasm to make it seem less heavy duty, I removed too much free play. I tested it a few times to make sure it was ok, but yeah it appeared to grab fine, but I think it was still slightly disengaged. If you know what I mean. I got it to the mech's then vic roads, when it started to slip. About 30m's from home it gave out.

The best part is no C*NT would help me fkn push it!! So I had to get a fkn tow truck to get it off the main highway and drop it in a side court untill I could organise some friends to give me a push late night style.

Yeah basicaly I think that I may have done a bit of damage to it (just the friction plate probably) plus I think it was slipping on the strip last time I went down the 1/4 mile. SO I figure, its time to update to some thing that can support the new power or get it rebuild to handle every thing. either ither.

by the looks of the pressure plate style design, it isn't a hyper single, i would lean towards a brassy or ceramic with a heavy duty pressure plate.

Yeah like I said he was a tool. Made me replace my windscreen as well. There was nothing wrong with it. he claimed that it was 'sand blasted'. Shit loads of little cracks, extremely tiny. Was BS but I had to change it. Was seriously running out of time.

Anyway, any thoughts on it?

leave the clutch and put it back the way it was whatever you did to it, a clutch is not a defect. theyll be making manuals illegal soon then if thats the case as its harder to drive than auto hahaha.

just so you know dude, clutch manufacturers generally dont give two shits about the appearance of their product, only the higher end shit ive seen is anodized/pretty, and thats usually to protect the thing, and make obvious who made it.

ive seen clutches that have a variety of colours splashed on them with no regard as to how they'll look, it doesnt really matter, as you dont see it at all.

that said, its obviously a heavier duty button clutch, but other than that, you cant really tell until you take it off, if you've got a rattly sound when you put your foot down when its in gear, its a sprung centre (my experience with em)

Yep already done that. Which is way I'm looking at maybe rebuilding rather then just buying, as I've got it working again and it seems ok.

Yeah thats pretty obvious, apperance that is. I was just thinking that the description of the hyper single combined with the colour might indicate that it was one. I was kinda hoping that someone on here had actualy seen an exedy hyper single designed for the 1j/r154 and be able to tell me if the shape of the pressure plate was the same or different.

Either that or some one has the same or similar clutch and could help me actualy identify it with out removing it.

thats a pull type hyper single for a subaru, but premise is the same.

doesnt look like yours, as its anodized, and yours is painted.

dunno if exedy changed their painting/etc methods some time after yuor clutch was made, but yeah.

keep trying a google image search for exedy gear and see if you can match it up.

Yeah seen a couple now that look full bling so I'm guessing its not. So far I'm thinking its a cooked up special with teh fully ghey paint. lol

what about extreme ? dont they paint their pressure plates purple ? they do have a listing for the supras aswell
