    Default corolla exhaust?

    hey
i got the smallport ae93 rolla
looking at getting a 2 1/4 inch pressbent catback exhaust with no resonator and just a genie turbo muffler on the back dumping onto ground with a 3 inch tip,

would this be too loud? or should i go resonator?
or even go just 2 inch catback with the genie turbo exhaust?

    cheers

Yes it would be loud. Too loud however depends on your scale of judgement. For you it may be fine. For the police and their db meter however, it's a different story.

I dare say it will be very droney as well with no resonator which would suck for everyday driving.

it prob will be to loud for the police and Engineer,
i have in my rolla, a 20valve, with extractors, then 2 1/4 mandrel bend zorst, a cat and a big resonator, and a straight through glass packed muffler, and that is barely legal when i had it engineered it was still around 95 DB

before that it was, the same, except for a straight through muffler with nothing in it, and a smaller resonator, that was 110 DB on the backdown..

    hrmmmm
are there big fines for exhausts which are too loud?
    haha, cause well
i am kinda evaluating a catback exhaust,
would there be any gain from a catback? atm only costing me 100 bux for a 2 1/4 inch catback no resonator

the resonator is 70 bucks from memory..

that 100 bucks doesn't sound like u got a muffler

i got some straight through oval type muffler on my corolla, and it's 2.25 catback.. it was alright when i got it, but after the induction it just got pretty loud.. still legal though it's a proper system with a resonator and what appears to be a Lukey sports muffler..

also, i've used Lukey's ultra-flo.. it's the quietest straight through muffler i've ever come across.. at idle it's as quiet as a stock muffler, and on high revs it makes a little more noise than the stock muffler.. nice tone too

i got let them try the car without the resonator, i liked the sound, but on the db meter it was waaaaaaay too high,
then i got them to put a resonator on straight after the cat,
there is no drone, still got a nice sound, and deep

    prob solved

Unless you are going to turbo the poor 4A-GE, youll need to be using a lot of 6000rpm to get up hills. 2 1/4 is way too big for a 1.6ltr - ie no low end power.

it seems fine for mine.. not much low end, but good at bout 4k so just keep the revs up when you need power problem solved.. also has mad high end power when you really want to go quick.

smaller exhaust only makes more power if your cams are too big.. and then it's a cam problem, not an exhaust problem

For AE92 exhausts, see the following: (should apply to most Corollas of the same vintage).

    The mufflers.
    Testing procedures.
Detailed test results (inc. audio so you can hear how they sound).
    Summary of Results.

The Genie Tornado can be replaced with the Lukey LSU17272 in stainless.
The Exhaust Technology may be able to be purchased still, but I haven't contacted ET in Adelaide.
I wouldn't have a clue about the Genie SS resonator, but I do know that Genie no longer make mufflers etc, as they sold their production a few years ago. Possibly to Lukey???

My AE82 Twin Cam got a new exhaust a few months ago, Exhaust Technology in Adelaide fitted a mild steel mandrel bent 2 inch cat-back system with the ET Tube in the middle and a Lukey straight-thru muffler at the rear (not sure which model). Gives a great tone and good middle to high range performance without being excessively loud. Now all I need is a decent set of extractors and a better flowing cat and I'm set!

(By the way, I sat reading that article in the waiting room while my exhaust was being fitted, just confirmed that what I was buying was the right thing for my car, although maybe 2 1/4 inch would have been better. 2 inch was the budget option, which suited me.)
