    Default electronics questions

    hi
i am in the process of putting a 2jz into my hilux(when the front cut finally arrives) and i am starting to think what other stuff i will need and looking to start collecting it
as this is my first turbo/fuel injected car i need some advise on what i will need
im going to try and get the stock turbos to fit but if they dont i will get a ebay manifold and go for a single turbo
im just wondering what i will need for the usual fmic/injectors/more boost combo
i have heard of many things with lots of letters in there name (avcr, safc, ebc)but have no idea what they do and what i will need

    thanks

if u've got the stock ECU, and u've got the stock motor, u won't need any of that avcr, safc etc etc...

but if u wanna go for a big single, u'll be going for a whole different ballgame.. in which case, if u're chasing high horses, u'll need bigger injectors, fpr, aftermarket ecu etc etc

erm.. don't u get the stock turbos with the front cut?? erm.. also does ur cross-member fit it or u'll need a different sump to clear the cross-member??

only thing i can see u'll need is a fuel pump that can support the 2JZ (a simple walbro GSS342 comes to mind, or bosch 040).. and yea fuel lines etc etc...

and if it's ur first, i'd suggest get it running stock first, then build it up later on so this way at least u have a basis to start on... and it'll run... who knows u might be happy with it the way it is? keep in mind u'll be running a big motor in a car that's lighter than what it came with

my plan is to run the stock turbos but i have heard they wont fit but if they do i want to run the stock ecu but put bigger injectors and more boost and fmic and leave it at that for now
getting a house is pretty important at the moment so i cant blow heaps and will obviously make engineering/rego easier

bigger injectors + more boost + fmic will mean u'll need a bigger fuel pump, FPR and a piggyback like E-manage... and possibly a fuel cut defender?

erm... with the turbos sorry i can't help u.. but i do know the 1J fits in there.. hold on while i look around.. pretty sure i've seen it somewhere.. grrr

thats the info im after fitting it in there wont be the problem but its sorting out stuff like that i want to know
also if i have to put a single turbo on it can i still run the stock ecu at the standard boost

    what year is your hilux??
I have a 92 with a 2jz sitting in there now. I went the single turbo setup, as my dump pipe was fouling on the booster ( i could have installed a earlier model booster but didn't want to seeing i wanted to run bigger brakes).
Getting a 2j in is tricky. you need to make new engine mounts on the chassis, which sits directly over the cross member, then you need a section the sump. the other thing is the length oof it means you have very little room for a radiator, and will definalety need to run a thermo, which means swapping the aristo water pump to a supra one.

If you can get the 2j in without going single it will make life easier and cheaper, so far i have spent aleast 8g (doing it myself) and the motor isn't running yet. and i didn't have anyone to help to answer my questions.

bit of a bold statement man, as much as we'd like to beleive it, toyota didnt intend on releasing the 2J as a motor to modify, they designed it to be a decent powerhouse though.

while some of you may not agree, toyota have proved this time and time again, over-engineering everything and making sure that, under any circumstance, the motor will not malfunction.

because of this, when you modify it for more power, theres a bunch of stuff you can do, often times, simple, and cheap to boost the power by a large margin, and taking toyotas over-compensating fuelling out of the equation is one of them. A safc/e-manage will do wonders on an otherwise stock motor, while nothing spectacular, it'll improve the motor in all aspects, response, outright power, torque etc.

switching in a single doesnt mean it has to be a ball-tearing big mutha, turbos have advanced heaps since the 2J was released, and its possible to have a turbo now that makes the same, or even more power, while having the same response, in some cases, better.

look into your options, if the engine wont fit, it wont fit, and theres no point in working around the motor, swapping in different parts if your eventual (within 12 months) plans include a single, meaning all that work, and money goes to waste.

IMO if your modifying a car, budget and time should never be a restriction (within limits of course) because it ends up causing shortcuts, overlooking things, and problems later on.

you dont need a big single, in order to get it to fit, just use a well sized single, and you shouldnt need to ugrade injectors runnign it on low boost, which leaves the option there for later, if your chasing more power (which you will) to turn up the wick on the turbo, and then fit up the supporting mods.

    Elmo.

    its a 1991 model
i probably used the wrong words of doing it cheap
i am doing it properly the first time and if that costs x$$
    then so be it
i have the lsd diff sorted with the right ratio 3.9/1
i will be fitting a new bosch fuel pump and surge tank
im just going to see how i go with the twin vs single turbo if the twins will fit i will use them but if they wont its no big issue as i will just fit a single
the mounts and sump are not a problem as i can do that by myself
getting a custom aluminium radiator and thermo fans and fitting the supra pump anyway as i dont want to cook it on hot days
just meant on a budget as a "dont want to spend all my house deposit" and im on a time constraint because if im not it will still be sitting there in 2 years(im lazy)
im looking to run around 15-18psi or what ever the stock turbos can handle but was wondering what in need if i up the boost and run a decent fmic
