My 4AGE, coughs, backfires, splutters and then stalls at 4000RPM, but only once warm?

Im 99% sure that 4AGs dont have a limp mode. The TPS doesnt do anything except for accel/decel enrichment, and also closed/open loop when at WOT. Everything else is handled by the MAP sensor.

Yes the 20v does especially when you don't connect the speed sensor. My speed sensor was broken and i had to get it replaced. It fixed the problem. But you will know cos the engien light will go on but then if you didn't connect that wire that your stuffed either way you will just have to put the car into diagnostics mode to find out

Limbo, do u mean silver 20v or black?
i have a silver one that is doing similar problems described above, but never stalls(used to but not after a tune), and just 'lags' at around 4k when im cruiseing, no probs if foots to the floor. its in a ae82 so there is no speed sensor as its a mecahincal speedo. my mechanic said the electric speed sensor has nothing to do with the speedo we just screwed in the mechanical one.

its been pissing me off for months! the engine dose what a carburated engine would do on a cold engine, but only when the car is hot, never when its cold(not that ive really tried).
after seeing the response phrostbyte got i might start a thread about my prob too...

what do you mean by "tune"... spark plugs and timing, or programmable ecu?

If you are running stock ecu, i'm sure there is lots of information on toymods.org.au - 4age.net etc.

just doing a quick search on the old toymods, it seems that not running a speed sensor will only restrict the rpm to 7200... not affect the engine performance otherwise .

Take that with a grain of salt as it's thirdhand from the mis-information super highway

its a stock ecu, i ment sparks n timming. and it revs out to 7.9 at least, ive hit it more then once. so the speed sensor on the silver 20v has nothing to do with it.

i guess i will just start replacing sensors till i find it. i think ill start with the tps.

do you own a good multimeter? Before you go ripping things off and replacing them, get a workshop manual for the engine and check values of the connections. The TPS is fairly simple, and if you get the right readings I'd leave it alone (bit of a pain to set properly).

I'm sure the tech section would have some docs on your 20v. While i'm sure your engine does rev past 7200, I wouldn't trust the stock rev guage too much, especially not while you are driving the car to redline. I'm pretty sure in all the excitement of whatever the hell i was doing, i've seen my guage go over 8000rpm.

In closing, my advice is to maybe read about the sensors and their function before removing them, especially the ones that are sealing air or water.
