ok, i went back and got the front end alignment done AGAIN...

    FRONT:

    camber: -1.7 (-1deg,40min)
    toe: 0.0mm
    caster: +6.2 (+6deg,10min)
    king pin: +11.1
    inc angle: +9.4

    REAR:

    partial toe: 0.5mm
    toe: 1.0mm
    camber: -1.7 (-1deg,40min)
    thrust angle: 0

i also disconnected the PPS loom before and after the adjustment...

    VERDICT - holyfuckbbq!!11eleven

now it corners AND feels tight, unbelievable
steering is now too heavy under 30kmh, but with the planned install of the above PWM, i should be able to get the assist back at under 20kmh, then tail it off up to 40kmh where ill dial in no further assist...

    problem sorted

    hope this helps someone

    cheers

    Sounds great.

Dont you wish you could hire small cameras so you could see what difference the castor makes during cornering - 6* sounds massive, so I'd be curious what the contact patch does while cornering.

the MA70 sorta has that jaycar thing from factory, if you turn slowly, it turns the wheels more, whereas faster steering will make it turn slower.

Witzl is a magician with these things, so you can make it taper off?

what exactly are you supposed to use as an input? as in, you can adjust how much assistance you get, but what determines when these increments change?

would you need a speed input so that the gizmo says "ok, im going this fast, dial in this much assistance"?

I was under the impression of how this Factory adjustable power assist shit worked? Peewee, feel free to enlighten me as you seem to know?

Power steering does not change the geometry of the rack.
Whether the power assistance (keyword assistance) is on or off, turning the wheel X degrees will turn the rack X distance.

Power steering just make it LIGHTER, not quicker.

Cars with PPS (progressive power steering) have a valve that regulates the flow of the fluid.
Under a certain speed, this valve opens wide, enabling lots of flow, making the steering lighter/easier.
While it may seem quicker, its not.

At speeds, this valve closes down, thus restricting fluid flow, and making the steering heavier, more like a car with no power steering.

The Jaycar thing effectively lets you reprogram the factory PPS unit.
Instead of say, fully open below 20kph, varied between 20 and 60, closed above 60 (or what ever), you can program it to what ever you like, you can have it snap shut above 20kph if you like.

Ah, alright then, i found out what its actually called, "Speed sensitive power steering" i took it as that the wheel speed varies how much the actual wheels turn.

Cheers for clearing that up mate

Witzl should have a controller you can borrow.

    I'm interested too.

The Crown runs a VN Commodore rack. When it decides to die (I have been running it for a year so probably soon ), I was thinking of replacing it with a Commodore rack with variable assistance. I obviously need to find out what signal drives the solenoid.

Does this magical black box provide the drive signal, or does it just modify the pulse width?

It's essentially the same as their boost controller, but with one map. It provides a PWM output for the solenoid.

What about just changing the size of the pulley on the power steering pump? That might affect the hardness of the turning maybe?

On my jzx81 rack, i if i disconnect the steering black box, the wheel gets hard to turn....really hard lol

The speed sensitive steering could be a hinderance while drifting as you could be doing 60km.h in a straight line but your speed sensor is reading the wheels as doing 160km/h and therefore makes the wheel stiff and hard to flick.
I might have to get one of those jaycar gizmos.
