    Default Water pump failure...

So the water pump on my trusty ol' 4ac decided to spray my engine bay with coolant yesterday. When I pulled off the timing belt cover and had a closer look I found that it was coming out of the casing. I pulled the pump off and a good portion of the inside of the housing had been eaten away so much that it had gone through its entire thickness. To me it sort of looks like cavitation damage but I'm not too sure, it could just be corrosion.

It was a repco one which was marked with the GHB brand and was just over a year old. I use tectaloy 60plus coolant in it because it's pretty cheap.

I want to know what might be the cause and what I can do to prevent it happening in the future, also if anyone has had a similar problem with this brand?

So here are some mobile phone pics, my propper camera has gone to africa

Oh I don't have the pump anymore either as it got replaced under warranty...

Buy genuine parts that your engine depends on to keep running reliably...

Anything that i buy aftermarket i dont expect much from and 99% of the time it performs how i expect, so things like oil pumps, water pumps, timing belts etc etc i buy genuine or a well known brand

Yeah but I'm tight and genuine tend to be expensive

It is good advice though, as I have found out through such things as bastard, evil, leaking non-genuine oil seals but thats another story...

Also I have heard recomendations of the repco ones for 4ag replacement and that sort of thing...

Ive never had a problem with aftermarket parts.. Might have just had bad luck and got a dodgy one.. Take it back to repco and see what they say.. Should last more than a year..

    Cheers,

    Pisso.

I know it isnt exactly what hapen to you but i had 4ac fan on the pump (gze sprinter) for the time being till i sorted out a better radiator and after only 2-3 months of it being driven the pump split in half. Was told AFTER that the fan was to blame and was commen...
The pump was a new toyota pump, $140 and only lasted that long.
Now ive got a el cheapo pump, celica radiator, its electric fans and havent had a issue. Maybe in youre case if you have the fan on it, it was a dodgy from new pump and the fan to blame.
who said you couldnt make a ae86 rear quarter outa bog, fibreglass and expanding foam!!

Well what people don't often realise is that the FWD pumps aren't designed to support a clutch fan so its no surprise it killed it. Would have warn out the bearings very quickly, then they would have seized, pump explodes because of turning force from fan belt.

I've actually just put one of those GHB pumps on my 4AGE AE71 so I guess we'll see how long it lasts, I mean they are Japanese made so I wouldn't expect they'd be that unreliable. Thinking about it, there was one of them on my 4AC also which judging by its color had been on there for about a year, maybe 2. I'll have to crack it open and see if there is any internal damage. I've got a massively eroded AE71 rear housing laying around too which came from some other car.
