Red face 7M CAS PROB : pickup mount

ok after pondering on this for some time i need some engineering minded ppls opinions.
where to mount autronic reluctor pickup on 7m (main pickup at 60 deg btc )

1 harmo: this is rubber and moves, not a chance ( i wont risk a customers motor on a piece of rubber ive seen moved 20degrees from its orig pos) . dowel it so it doesn't move, then it wont do its job. (they move 4 degrees back and forth under normal use ive been told)

2 make steel crank pulley: no longer will this pull down harmonics so may cause crank fatigue, and the assembled motor will need to be pulled down to get double keyed as ive seen single keys snap costing motors, once again i dont trust this.

3 flywheel side: its auto and so runs a flex plate (as name suggests it moves) i know they only move parrallel with the back of the block but unsure if it will move to close or far away from the sensor causing false triggering.

4 mount trigger disc on back of crank: this would be so close to the sump and inspection plate ( that it may foul if a rock hits the plate ) i dont really want to risk it.

5 auxilary shaft: this is seriously the only place left i can think of apart from the cams. (been told the factory cas is no good as it waivers.)
the plate (that looks like it blocks off a mech fuel pump on carb versions) looks to have a nice area behind where i could have the reluctor inside the engine, the shaft also has a machined ring on it i could get milled to have the 3 teeth at 60deg btc.
the shaft moves at crank speed and is on the tension side of the belt about 150mm from crankshaft C/L so there shouldn't be any slack at this point.

any good opinions would be greatly appreciated as im going crazy at this point and would really like for the customer to be able to drive his car this century.

PS anyone think there would be a prob with a sealed reluctor inside an oily engine or know where i can get one 70mm from tip to mounting face.

    cheers

sorry matt, ill get it back to you soon

I'm quite certain Glen is running a crank trigger on his - was done by SAS. Give Rod a call and talk to Jim, cos Jim would've been the one who made it.

Yeah I guess you could set it up so that the CAS wheel is mounted to the part of the harmonic balancer that is fixed (not rubber isolated)....?

yeah you can usually make something that bolts onto the crank pulley using the removal bolt threads, this way it is perfectly accurate to the crank position.

That hole you talk about Linden is for the mechanical fuel pump for the early M's. There is a balance shaft in there I believe. I remember seeing something when I pulled my motor down.

Let me know how you go cause I'm thinking autronic maybe down the line.

Ps how long did it take you to write that post Linden??

about 50mins, know anyone that likes fit (biting tongue so hard its bleeding)

glens runs off the outside of harmonic and whilst this does work better than factory cas and has been done many times by many ppl it is not 100% ideal for my situation. SAS did this for a couple of reasons the main one is the fact that nobody wants to pay $1000+ for a cas ie labour cost to do it to the flywheel or what im thinking if the engine was installed in the car.

i thought about spinning up an alloy boss and putting a trigger disc on the front but was worried about a belt going awol and taking the setup out at the same time. i would really like this setup to be idiotproof (not a shot at owner just couldnt think of a better wording)
and 100% reliable (like 1j early).

Oi! So the flex plate idea is out the window? How much can it really move?

Does this mean the MR2 is gone? I'm free tomorrow night for some p00-sembly if required...

i would go on the flex plate and drill/machine a hole in the top of the bell housing
the flex plate wont move a whole heap as it is bolted to the converter and crank
seen it on old holden black motors(haha)

I was thinking mounting the trigger on the thin plate between the block and the bellhousing might be the go... Much easier to get a good position than mounting through the bell

if someone can give me a 100% accurate figure for how much the flexplate moves then i probably will but i dont want to have to set this up twice.
