My Yr12 Chem is coming back to me, and the VP fuel would be especially bad for you considering it is 70% Methyl-Benzene. You'd need to make sure your motor was sorted cooling-wise before using that gear!
so, i thought it would be of interest to see what different fuels contain (thanks to jeffro ra28 for the idea and fuel suggestions) i have always thought they were not nice for you....

anyway, point of this thread is to show what fuel is made from and how bad it really is for you

fossils...............................
It's funny, I was actually talking about this with my father over dinner tonight. He was amazed when I suggested how much toluene and benzene common fuels contained - it's good to have some numbers to back up my rough memory from last time I looked it up.
karl is VERY VERY scared!
look how much farking benzene is in these fuels! Makes me very unhappy that i spilt about 100mL of petrol over my hands on the weekend
*for those not in the know - Benzene gives you cancer, BADLY. It literally modifies your DNA.
...... butt scratcher?!
http://www.msdsonline.com.au has a lot of good info for this stuff - I always check that the kerosene I use for fire breathing is 100% kerosene.
Would also be interesting to see the break down of BP Ultimate as its supposed to be low on benzene.
Top thread and an interesting read.
If in doubt power out
Note to self, don't use petrol to wash hands

a complex mixture of volatile hydrocarbons containing parafins, napthenes, olefins and aromatics with carbon numbers predominantly between C4 and C12. may contain oxygenates. may also conatin small quantities of proprietary performance additives.
also contains benzene
as for percentages.. it is >90% gasoline

Thanks for that. Interesting that Mobil is so open yet the others aren't.
If in doubt power out
i'd say that BP's special additives that give it such a good quality burn and higher RON are being kept "secret", whereas Mobil use lots of toluene it would seem...
VP racing fuels.... hmmm i'll steer clear of that one thanks!

You are all a bunch of girly sooks! Oh no it's got aromatic hydrocarbons!! /runs away screaming and checking self for cancer What else to expect when you can't use our old friend tetra-ethyl-lead for increasing octane.
Interestingly some of the early fuels used high levels of benzene/toluene/aniline to improve octane, and when tetra-ethyl-lead was developed it was hailed as an innovation to improve petrol safety. Then, to create unleaded petrol they chucked the old nasties back in again.
The VP racing fuel looks pretty old school!
I wouldn't necessarily take MSDS info as gospel - it's not terribly accurate most of the time as the exact cmbinations are proprietry. Although most labs with a GC-MS could break them down pretty quickly.
Oh, and back when I looked at Benzene in fuel for a Uni project I found a swedish study that measured the concentration of benzene in servo food (like chocolate bars etc) and found it much higher than food kept in a supermarket. Plus servo attendants were more likely to get leukemia (Benzene is a cat 1 carcinogen known to cause leukemia).
So who's up for some tank siphoning this weekend!
you know what I mean this electric stream
and my tears in league with the
wires and energy and my machine
this is my beautiful dream
haha too benezene in food at servos?!? cant be good that i swallowed like 200ml of petrol tryin to syphon at the age of 10! maybe i'd be going a bit better in uni if it wasn't for that...

aww shit man! i didn't know that! the amount of times i've had my hands/skin covered in premium petrol is too many to count!! -
Well it was nice knowin you guys.
