Default how to tell what size earls fitting you need....

    howdy.

ive got to order some earls fittings for my oil cooler plate and the like.

im a bit confused as to what size matches the thread i have. i had a look on the earls website and the sizes are -10 and -8 and the like.

how do i work out what thread pitch and diameter and size and all that i need to screw into my oil filter housings and adaptor plate.

i hope i havent missed something obvious and not just making myself look stupid!

Thread guages would be the easiest, i just take the stuff i need fittings for down to the local performance shop so i cant get it wrong. Theres so many different types. So unless your getting them dirt cheap off the net thats the easiest way, but heres what ive learnt about speedflow fittings

tapered etc thats bpt i think? correct me if im wrong, and npt being the other which is just a constant untapered thread.

The 90degree, 45degree and straight pieces that join onto the hose & adaptor are easy enough because the -6 -8 etc is just one standard thread and just indicates the ID of the hose and fittings.. The adaptor is the tricky one, that needs thread guages and/or calipers.

Yep id suggest taking it to the shop who sells them, takes all the hassels out of it. but you can measure it with a ruler so long as you have good eyes, and a set of pitch/thread guages from repco or somwhere like that.

The dash size of the fittings (eg -8, - 12) is the size of the internal diameter of the pipe in 1/16 of an inch. So -8 is half inch, -12 is 3/4 inch etc. Brake and clutch lines are usually -3.

Be careful getting fitting as there are 2 different tapers on them. Some have a 45 deg taper and others a 37deg taper. Mismatched ones will kind of seal on low pressure stuff, but certainly on brakes and fuel injection you want to make sure that all of your mating male and female connectors have the same taper.

If you take all your bits and peices down to a hydaulic shop (eg Enzed) they should be able to sort things out for you.
