I just remembered that the ignitors NEED to have a VERY GOOD earth to work correctly.

They will still have voltage even if the earth is bad, but they won't work.

Make sure they are either bolted to bare body work, or have an earth strap.

I had tried that. I pulled the ignitor off the other day and cleaned under it to ensure a good earth. But, I did run a earth jumper to the block tonight but didn't help.

I have checked the wiring a dozen times. I even ran a jumper wire from the sensor to the ecu to bypass the wires in the harness and still no good. The engine starts up good cold and then when it heats up a bit it stops and it wont start again until for about half an hour or so.

Lexus here in Brissy can have a new crank sensor for me by Friday for $160.00. I haven't tried toyota yet. I might have to try that because it is really looking like either the sensor or the ecu. I have been clearing the codes but it is still giving me either code 12 or 13 after i stops.

    Cheers,
    Shane.

I'd borrow things before buying anything new.
Sensor and ecu failure are uncommon.
Errors in wiring/earthing are very very common.

How close to Warwick are you?

I'm 2 hours from Warwick. I'm in Caboolture just north of Brisbane. I hear what you are saying about sensor/ecu problems. I have rechecked all the wiring a dozen times and it all looks good.

It has been running real good since and no error codes apart from just recently. Even now when it runs it idles real smooth and sounds sweet. I may have to time how long it runs for because it seems to run for about the same length of time from cold each time i have started it.

Maybe its time to take it to somone with the equipment to check it all properly.

Quad Cams Australia is in Warwick (1UZ shop)
Its run by a guy named Peter.
Going on past experience he'll be more than happy to help you out with borrowing/hiring sensors and ecu's to try and track down the culprit.

This is just going from bad to worse now. I have brought back an old problem. If I power up the transmission soleniods as per the diagram I am getting some feedback into the ignition system somehow. If I turn the key on and then off the dash lights glow and I am getting about 5 volts feeding back from somewhere. If I start the engine and switch it off it is fine. Go figure. But it is only if I connect the black/red wire up for the trans.

Time to park it and go inside I think.

I finally got some time to look at the car today. I revised the wiring and found the power wire for the auto solenoids was wired connected up to the wrong power supply so that is all good now.

I ran the car and waited for it to stop. This time there was no continuity in the crank angle sensor circuit. It was all good down to the sensor so I checked and it was open circuit. If I bumped it though it would jump anywhere from 800 to 1100 ohms and back to open circuit. Once it cooled down the car would start it was good. Now every time it stops the crank sensor is open circuit until it cools down.

I'm going to call Lexus tomorrow to buy one, unless someone knows a better supplier. It about $165 form them.

    Thanks for your help guys.

Just get a 2nd hand one.
Yours is honestly the first I've ever heard of failing.

You should be able to pick up a 2nd hand one for $20

Yeah, from all reports it is unusual for them to give trouble but it went open circuit a few times this afternoon. It seems to be when it heats up.

A secondhand one would be good but I rang all the jap importers in the Brisbane area and nobody has one. One importer on the Gold Coast has an ECU but not a sensor. They all seem to sell the 1uz complete and don't have any parts motors. Probably because they are such a good engine that they seldom break.

I picked up the new sensor today.

The car was running in the garage for 1/2 hour. That's about three times longer than it has run for the last week. It seems that the crank sensor was the problem. The Lexus guy said they don't sell too many crank sensors so obviously I got a dud.

Thanks to all those that offered advice.

    Cheers,
    Shane.
