    Default 18rg -> 22re

    Hey

Just wodnering my brother has a 4wd 1980 hilux that currently has had a 18rgeu transplanetd into it (by previous owner) that has twin solxes on it (shoulda been efi).

Anyways thats not the point wondering whether a 22r (or 22re) would bolt straight into the 18rg's place?

reason its its EFI so itll be less tempermental and itll be more reliable/fuel efficient than the 18rg, which has been nothing but trouble since we got the car.

Obviously there will be wiring involved but ive got that covered, a m8 is fair electrical whiz. Just wanting to know really about the mechanical side and whether itll all match up or not (bellhousing to to block etc).

Any1 converted any car from 18rg to 22r/re?

    any info appreciated

    Thanks

There's nothing grunty or fuel efficient about a 22R - provided the 18R is in good order, you'd probably be best sticking EFI on that, and getting rid of the carbs. This would make it a much happier thing to live with.

yer but there isnt an abundance of 18rg efi setups around. theres one on ebay at the moment but its minus the ECU and ive already read that the ECU's r really hard to track down, n the 22re ecu can be used but has to be modified a fair bit, then theres aftermarket gear which isnt really cheap.

the 18r is, imho, a better engine than the 22r.

I've had a celica with a 22r-e, and it is far from fuel efficient

I used to get 10L/100 when my car was going. 22re all the way . You can probably get the 22re put in fairly easily as the hilux came out with 22r. The coronas and celicas have the same engine as the 96+ hiluxes but just with efi. Can probably pick up a fairly good one for around 200-300$

yer well theres one on here for free with blown head gasket.

im aware they r in the newer hiluxes and they haul them along nicely.

so steering away from the which is better than which arguement....... will the 22re bolt str8 in, im pretty confident it would. Saw on ebay the 18R and 22r use the same clutch so thatll be no dramas.

Spose there is only 1 way to find out.

Yes a 22R will fit anywhere an 18R was. The block mounting points and the bellhousing bolt pattern are the same. Obviously there will be differences in the plumbing and wiring but I'm sure you can sort that out for yourself.

hey hate to derail or post on a dead thread or anything.. but just wondering can you swap an 18rg head onto a 22re, and would it be beneficial for performance reasons??

no - for starters the front of the engine (e.g. timing gear) is all different.

It is possible to put a 22R crank in an 18R-G and bore it to 2.4L but it's generally considered not worth the trouble. Adding a turbo will give better results for far less money/effort.

    18R: 88.5x80
    22R: 92x89

    Pretty big difference there.

    Not the same block.

I'd be pretty nervous about a 3.5mm overbore, but people have done it so I guess it can be OK.
