as far as i know, TVIS from a 3SGE will definately, definately not fit on a 4AGE.
besides, if your engine doesn't have it (smallport i figure) then it doesn't need it, the smallport was designed not to need TVIS from the start.
Hi all!
I was talking to a mechanic the other day and he told me that I should put the tvis system off say an 86 celica 3sge onto my 4age sprinter!
Now I'm not too sure about this guy cos he was VERY convivnced that a 3sgte would bolt straight into my sprinter as well!!![]()
BUT the power increase that he was talking about was substantial so i thought hey asking won't hurt!
Now I know nothing a bout fuel injection so don't bag me out if I don't know what this guy is talking about!!![]()
Anyway Thanks
Cerby

I think instead of TVIS go for 3S conversion![]()

If it(TVIS) can fit and work with your car it will be good. Other wise don't bother much as it will be too difficult to configure and make it work. Unless someguy has already done it and willing to share his experience.
And if you managed to do that conversion don't forget to post a pic of TVIS just kicked in Yo!![]()
the 4A and 3S are incredibly similar, their looms are very similar, most of the consumable parts they use are the same etc.
TVIS is good, but you can only feel it kick in if your car isnt tuned right, that said though, having the timing out gives a turbo-lag effect

i was gonna make a crack about tasmanian mechanics and high school but......
perhaps he was confusing turbo with tvis???
TVIS is an intentional port restriction, to try and counter the negative effects of having ports that are too big...
what sort of increases was he talking about?

Placing TVIS in a non TVIS engine will not give you a higher engine output at hi revs.
TVIS is there to close off 1 of the runner pairs to increase air velocity at low revs thus increasing low mid range response. I am unsure of the similarities between the 3S and 4A And I know sweet FA about 4A's but if you mechanic is talking about swapping the TVIS for midrange why not source correct 4A TVIS setup?

hi
sorry i taken ages to reply been computerless for a while!
First i really should clarify my original statement. My friend with the 86 celica was talking to his mechanic about my car! I'm not sure that they ever talked about the of power gain.
I was very sceptical cos i've seen how big the tvis system in question is and it would take some serious engine bay rethinking to fit it in!! My 4age is a jap import motor ( I didn't do the conversion i bought it like this off previous owner) i'm told it is the 100kw motor tho.
I was mainly asking becuase i just couldn't beleive this guy so i wanted a few real expert opinions!! oh well anything in the engine bay is going on the back burner to allow for the respray oh yeah and the removal of the crazy chromeys!!!!![]()
Anyway thanks for the advice now i know to ignore the mechanic when he get that crazy glint in his eye!!
cheers cerby
TVIS is really no magic bullet for your engine.
The ports on the "big port" 4AG were quite a bit too big for the size of the engine (in fact they are huge). In order to compensate for that at low revs they placed the TVIS system on the engine. Effectively it is a flat plate with 8 holes in it, 4 of which have butterflys which open and close based on rpm and other variables.
The Small port (100kw engines) still have quite large ports for a 1.6 and are much better sized. They do not need and certainly dont benefit from TVIS.
