    Default A few 1JZ Questions

I'm hoping someone can help me out a bit here... I did many searches but couldn't find anything.

Currently, the head is taken off my 1JZ getting tested, etc. So far so good. Now it's question time...

Do I need to replace the head bolts now that I have taken the head off? If so, are they the same as 2J ones? Where can I get these from?

I also need a gasket kit (I think that's what its called???) - new head gasket, camshaft seals, etc. I have been quoted $350 for one of these. Does anyone sell them cheaper?

If there is another thread on this, then please just link it here....

    Cheers

yes, head bolts need to be replaced.. always.

gaskets sound about right. camshaft seals are usually the same as the crank nose seal on most jap engines. head gasket price depends on quality really.

depending on how much stuff you need gasket wise, I would get a price from some of the us toyota places. I can't remember the names off hand but www.supraforums.com has heaps of them. from memory, you could get a FULL gasket set for 1jz for about 300.

Can anyone source these at a reasonable price?

I've also been told to just go for head studs instead.

Thanks Chris.. I will find out exactly what it includes for $350. Might be easier to get it local rather than overseas just to save a few bucks after postange, etc.

checked my PM's and it was $179US shipped to him so plus whatever it costs to get to oz. Usually isn't that much and should only take a week.

It was 179.00 shipped and that included the 12.00 for shipping. It weighed 6-7 lbs.

With a good $AU I would be going this way as the places in toyota sell it for a lot more because there are limited suppliers and not many people buying them.

    Elmhurst Toyota Scion

VRS set is what you need, which stands for Valve regrind set. Which means everything you need if you removed the cylinder head.

Head bolts only need to be replaced if they are torque to yeild, a simple visual inspection of them this can be determined.
Head studs are much better tho, get them from ARP.

toyota genuine shit is best. apart from the head studs @ ARP.

but if you get all toyota gear, your motor will be good for about 600hp, solid motor.

I still haven't found that out yet... Can anyone confirm or deny (wording) that the 2jz head bolts/studs will fit a 1JZ?

Might be a Q for the yanks...

    Thanks everyone...

I will be getting a VRS set from a local bloke - can't remember the price exactly, but it isn't genuine Toyota.

I've been told by a reputable workshop that I can re-use the original head bolts if they are in good condition. Head studs only really need to be used for big horsepower which may be a little overkill for me.
