The reasons im aware of that can cause a miss fire are, Lean Mixture, Bad leads, Bad spark plugs, Bad battery, Bad Coil/s, Stuffed Dizzy. Please correct me if im wrong.

Is it Dizzy or Dizzyless ignition?
Make sure all your spark plugs are all in good condition. For example make sure the gap is ok and the electrode isnt worn out.
Check Mixture, if you cant do it Electronically, look at your spark plug if its white its Lean, Black is Rich.
Make sure the battery is sufficient and the altenater is charging.
Thats all for now i think

    more than likely leads
have you washed the engine lately (water in plug tubes)
leads could also be shorting out on plug tubes but will still show resistance on a multimeter so to make sure get a roll of insulation tape and wrap the leads in tape where they go through the plug tubes

has it being raining there or have you washed your enigne lately. if water gets in it, it will misfire, or if the little tab is worn, misfire.

    Which cylinder is it?

Spark plugs, dizzy. Pull it off and check for gunk or worn away electrodes.
Leads are the next thing to look at.

Grab some off another car and plus them in one at a time and see if that fixes the problem.

If none of this helps, maybe its your injectors. Get them cleaned etc.

Our 3sfe was running like a pig due to the dizzy being all fouled up with engine oil.

The dizzy shaft bearing had worn and had got to the point where it chewed out the seal allowing oil from the head to pass through and into the dizzy.

    Might be worth checking..........

By the way, don't let toyota tell you that they are not servicable, and a new dizzy housing will set you back $375 !!!!!

I fixed ours, pulled it all apart, new bearing $7 and new seal $6 from repco.
Pretty easy too ( I had never pulled the dizzy apart on a toyota before)

    Cheers.

tonight, when its nice and dark, go outside open bonnet, kick the car over and look at the leads and see how much tracking you can see of the leads, see if the leads are really damaged and the spark may be jumping or a lead may be losing the spark,
    easy to identify at nightime.
dont think theres much of a moon around either.
but seems it was the dizzy anyway, oil seals bugger up all the time on these dizzys.

    What does 'misfire' mean?
If this is just an occasional hiccup sound from the exhaust that only happens when idling, ignore it - just drive it!

If it's under load, accelerating, WOT, whatever, then you actually do have a problem.

Look for carbon tracks on the dizzy cap & coil.
