Default Differences in 1S 2S and 3S engines.

    Hi all.
Dont post in tech section much ...but i got a question..

Recently ive heard of this car that sounds good
it has a 1S-U engine , which i believe only existed in the 1984 -> 1987 Cresta (SX??)

Ive been searching for information on it and compatible engines released here in Aust.

can anyone find information on this engine and whether or not anything at all on the engine (water pump etc) is compatible with 2S or 3S engines....
as i want to keep the 1S-U in the car as its going to be my daily driver.

    Cheers

    coFF.

I've seen an SA6(0/1) Celica that had a 1S. Worst case scenario if something really goes wrong spend $50 and a weekend sticking a 2S in it. The 1S is 1.8l isn't it?

What about in regards to parts , ie , 2S water pump fits on 1S ? 3S water pump fits on 2S ?

Johnny boy, I didn't say they were identical! I just said it would be a simple swap to put a 2S in!

Surely you could use parts from a 1S-Ci Camry?

I believe I found a 1S-E in a sv2x camry at a wrecker... central point injection. Was worth chopping the plugs off for whatever reason

Don't waste your time or money with a 2nd hand water pump, if it didn't leak right away it probably would before too long.

The 1s water pumps have different part number to 2s, and 3s water pumps. The rear housing on them is different, the front housing and gasket between them (the actual part you'd need) *looks* to be the same so an aftermarket/ebay spec pump for a 3sge *might* fit - I say 3sge to be safe as it's compatible either way where as 3sfe aren't.

Infact I'd almost bet it would bolt up as the bolt pattern and casting looks the same but I have a feeling the different part number might be because the pulley has a different number of teeth....

I'm sure toyota can get you the right pump... find someone who can get you trade price

1S-Ci. They used these before replacing them with 3S-FC for third-world spec Camry's.
