You change the ratainers, springs, valve stems. I think that's it. If you goto a good rebuild shop they shold be able to tell you.
ok, i know this has been covered a zillion times in the past. but, i am slow, too slow to work out the search function.
anyway...to all the guys who run higher lift camshafts, what sort of modifications did you do (if any) to eliminate float, ofcourse you got shims and springs to suit, but did you do the 'bucket under shim'?
to my disappointment, i havent even got round to taking the cam covers off my 4age, to see what design it currently has, so what does one do to run long duration higher lift cams safely? ie 288's with 9.5mm lift.
Any help would be much appreciated
Andy.

I would use new valve springs from one of our friendly sponsors: http://www.performancesprings.com.au/ which cost about $150 (I think less) with a Toymods discount, and then use this guide here: http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20t...%20Tuning.html to choose some suitable 1sz-fe shimless buckets.
Then purchase them from here: http://www.penrithtoyota.com.au/

thankyou very much sir...now i need to get around measuring suitable buckets...which i have no idea how to do :\
edit, the part numbers on the club4ag site, are they indenticle with the ones sold here?

Why are you changing the buckets?
I have been running shim over bucket on .380 in lift for years with no ill effects. Just fit your new cams and shim to suit.
well im not sure why, but if im investing abit in to this engine i dont want it to go into meltdown
ive just seen a few high lift cams on wrx's drop a shim (could be to the nature of the boxer) but obviously not a common problem with these 4a's?
i have never seen a shim fall out of a toyota engine yet. They are hard enough to get out at the best of times.![]()

I have also invested in these motors since 1990 and have used an 8000rpm change point with the same valvetain, forged pistons, quads, autronic,145rwhp, c/r gearset and 5.1:1 diff ratio. If you were talking 500 thou lift then I would recommend under bucket shims.
Cheers.:
thanks guys, nows its time to weigh up my options
cheers for your help.
The 4AGE I bought specifically for re-build, had a sticking (very slightly bent) valve due to the shim coming out of the top of bucket. This was evident as it had damage around the edge from where the (inlet) camshaft had impacted it while out of place.Originally Posted by Cruiser97_80
also check out the writeup on toymods, its a pretty good read:I don't know why you need to change the retainers, or how to change a valve stem without changing the whole valve.....

other way round, shim under bucket. shim over is stock setup.Originally Posted by mc68
you change the retainers because of the extra loading, stronger is better.even standard lift with a stock motor they stretch.
very good quailty springs, they get a hard time with loads of lift and revs.
quailty bronze guides.
depends on the lift and revs and your budget.
on high lift cams the cam lobe ramps harshly so it hammers itself against the side of the bucket and spits the shims of the top of the stock cam buckets.
saftey 8.5mm over this and you have no saftey margin at all! for a stock setup with good springs and retainers.
hope that helps
just make sure that you do change the valve springs if you are to run more lift.
I think that the stock ones bind at around 8.3-8.5mm
