Anyway enough of all this science-y magic mumbo jumbo, back to RGs

Anyone on here buy this beauty (if you wanna tell us of course)

Some pretty heat bidding on this needs a rebuild (converted R block) RG on sunday bought it up from a resonable $202 that it sat on for 5 days to a whopping $960

NOPE!!!!! Got mine for $450 and a sixer of pale ale

new chains, guides, tensioners, valves, springs, and cams are really tidy and look as though they have not spun on the buckets rebuilt Mikunis also from the same bloke my mate bought a RA23
(reminds me i must put up a thread on this RA23 Build it shall be awesome) that the motor was originally going in so in the boot was 2 spare manifolds to dellorto carb bodies with some bits on them (meh) RG oil pump thats seen very little use but has some marks in the trochoid gears from possible debis ingestion. Now the mild/warm R-C and very tight w50 in the celica is avail to me as the car will be goin JZ and on that R-C is wait for it wait for it................a twin point mallory distributer (I ponder whether its any better or worse than going Electronic Ign--- If some one has some input on that it would be great )

I will pull the head at some stage and find out what pistons are in it plus the kid that rebuilt it used a shit loads of cheap gasket glue and lots of it im scared balls of it will end up in an oil gallery somewhere same kid also DONATED his spare RG to his old trade school im going there to see if i can buy it of them

On top of that theres a couple RGs i know of for under 1k both unknown condition internally but one im confident is complete original EFI

As the conrod is only vertical at TDC and BDC, these are the two points in the cycle where it can actually handle the most force from the piston. However, once it starts getting into the cycle, the forces applied are at an angle, and the rod wants to bend.

As force is a factor of accelleration, as you spin the motor quicker, the rate of change of speed of the piston has to increase, and it does it in a squared manner (as explained for Ek (kinetic energy) above. This is because as you increase the speed of the piston, it has less time to change speed in. It's a vicious cycle

So going high up in the rev range, just rotating the engine, let alone trying to make power from it, becomes an arduous task. And this is why conrods like to work on their tan when you over-rev an engine...

Maybe F=MA is a better description then.

Although I do like Zammo's empirical approach to "shit".

$385 for flywheel + $85 for new ring gear (Amayama/Toyota) = New lightweight flywheel.

    (Haven't fitted it yet)

Fairly cheap in the grand schemes of things.

I dealt with Drew, seems like a good guy. All delivered within original quoted timeframe.
Hey, Got some questions for you guys who went through direct clutch supply for a steel flywheel.

did you supply them with the ring gear? Or do they have them sitting there?
Did you just get them to suit a standard clutch?
Did you have to send them a stock flywheel, or do they have the design on the computer?

seems like they are the cheapest option around.

Mate, I bought a new ring gear from amayama and then shipped it to Direct Clutch. They waited for it to arrive, fitted it and balanced the assembly.

Yep. I bought the flywheel and clutch kit from DCS. It's a factory replacement in terms of bolt patterns etc.

Didn't have to send them a stock flywheel, they have the design already.

They were very good to deal with.

Still haven't fitted it yet though, this makes me sad panda.

I also got my flywheel from DCS - just give them a call, the bloke there remembered Rudi's flywheel when i asked about an 18R flywheel..... so it was all good from there.
As for the ring gear, i just got myself an old flywheel, and will get the ring gear pressed off and pressed onto the new flywheel (JMR will do this for me).

I also havent fitted mine either.

So, looks like i will be joining club 18rg again TMMH! Downside is the engine is in pieces so i need to go ahead a rebuild it. Meh, nothing i haven't done 4 times previously. This time i can afford to keep the car as well as my others.

So, anyone bought a VRS kit recently? Any new advancements on the slipper chain guides? Knowing my luck i'll need both of these.....

    Sorry to interrupt Roadkill.

Before I ask a quick question I'm just informing people that I'm not doing the 18RGTE build. Mainly due to not having any mates that are in to cars or know enough about Turbo's to help me out XD The internet is great and Books help too but it's not the same as getting help from someone in person. New plan: Build my 18RG with EFI. Now I need to ask, Can I just slap all the EFI gear on the side of a regular RG (Not RGU) and it'll run good? Also is there a good 'Beginner ECU kit' out there at all? I'm keen to have a go at wiring one up and I've heard the stock 18RG ECU is basically an electronic carby =P

    Again, Sorry Roadkill.

    Marcus,

There are a number of ECU's on the market which are a great starting point, all depends how much you are willing to spend. Keep an eye out for second hand units too.

Adaptronic make a seemingly quite nice basic ECU which would do the job well. Haltech are also pretty popular, and have base models which will run an 18R-G quite well. If you are going a new ECU, don't bother trying to get the factory wiring loom, just make a new one. Also, you will need a throttle position sensor, as the factory one is just a switch and won't give the signal the ECU expects.

Best thing to do is search around and start reading on the ECU manufacturer's websites to find out what is suitable for you. Piggyback units won't be any good. I believe Adaptronic have links to most ECU manufacturer's sites on their website so you can compare the products.

If you are keen on DIY, the megasquirt thread here seems fairly comprehensive and Caam has just fitted one to his rg.
