Getting your missus to help bleed the brakes isn't everybody's idea of quality time.

shame the screws and bits aren't zinc coated... that always makes the carbies looks 10 times more awesome... good score though... always good to know your carbies are in good nick, saves alot of trouble later when your trying to tune it....

I thought it was cad plating that gave them the yellowy funky effect. Zinc coating would leave them silver much the same as they are now.

Most of the screws are actually stainless steel and some of the brackets are nickel/cadmium plated.

I thought about the funky yellow like the original but it is hard to get them the same as the original parts. We have the cad plating done for some of our parts at my work but it does not look good to me.

Another $50 -$100 would have seen them more "like new" as there are a lot more nuts and bolts I could be plating.

Time V value for money issues I have.

Enjoy them and I shall support them when the time comes to fire it up

    Regards

    Rodger

Zinc plating will leave a silver finish that resists corrosion. It's the gold chromate over the zinc coating that leaves the funky yellow. This increases the corrosion resistance more.

Cad plating is more resistant again, but not really economical for small jobs like that.

Rog, PM'ing you now with some suggestions.

Zinc Dichromate was the effect i had in mind...

    looks abit like this:

Nikel/Cadmium is what i would have said if i could think of it at the time...

18R rings should be exactly the same as 18R-G rings - except in the case of the 18R-GEU pistons (the low compression 8.3:1 versions)

All my other 18R-G rebuilds have used 18R-C rings

Any idea what the rings to use on an 18R-GEU are?? I will be needing some shortly, and would like to know in advance what items to look for (and I am sure Hosking will be madly searching). I did previously know about the difference though.

Oh, and my Squirt is coming along nicely, and I have the reco'd 1G DSM injectors as you mentioned in the 18R-GTE thread Witzl... any idea what I should do about the manifold side seals??

i unfortunately have the 8.3 pistons. rc rings are to thick for the groove of a 8.3 piston . so what other engines have a 88.5 mm bore this may be my only hope

a few pages back someone mentioned that they had to ahve the 18R-C rings machined down.

well i have had no luck what so ever finding rings after 2 days of ringing places all sorts of places but my mechanic mate knows a engine recoditioner and he said he will machine the grooves to suit the normal rings 10 bucks a piston .btw 88270 piston groove is 1.5mm and 18r ring is 2.0mm

when I needed new rings for my 18rgeu, I just found rings with the same bore, toyota one's and got the pistons machined to suit. cheap and easy.
