    thats wrong if the chain breaks they will bend valves ,also it does matter how you set the cams up as they will hit each other
    set motor to tdc set up exhaust no 1 lobe facing the exhaust manifold and set up inlet cam with no 1 lobe facing the inlet manifold
    also to note if you go by o-man 23 advice you will bend valves end quote

    Yeah, at TDC for cylinder 1, standard cam cylinder 1 lobes must point directly away from each other. i.e. timing notches all at 12:00 and cyl 1 cam lobes at 9:00 and 3:00.

    I dunno if I would agree with that.

    My valves are VERY close to the pistons already (9.7:1), I would certainly not like to see them get any closer when the timing gets outta whack.

    I have not purposely broken a timing chain to see though

    generally Totota non-interference engines have timing belts, not timing chains.

    I have bent 18RG valves by winding the cams indepentently of each other before. The head was off and I didn't check.
    Definately be very careful with 18RG valves.

    Steve, non interference means that when the piston is up and the valve is down, they dont hit. I have broken a chain with 9.7 pistons and 251 cams before... nothing hit. The valves will bend if you rotate the cams independant of each other as the valves will clash with each other not the piston.

    CelicaRA45... go snap a chain and see what happens... I did (un intentionally though, and thankfully I was 10 metres from my driveway)

    Thaks, I have set everything up so that the cam notches are at 12 oclock and the engine is at TDC so it all should be good. I will be lifting off the head today as soon as my mate can get here to help hold the chain and guide it thru the head. I have removed the tensioner from the side of the head so it should all just lift off and I dont need to remove the long curved guide that is bolted to the head.
    Thanks
    Cheers Dave

    They have to accrew enough for nose reconstructions as well as feeding his mime family. The dont talk much so they never need much water for their dry mouths.

    Its my mates and its in orange.

    Its a 3r or 2r I think.

    We have dreams of getting it in pristine condition, with a 1.8ltr carby motor to get a nice bubbly exhaust note for the cruiser.

    We got it (rt40), no Rust, good interior, running, paint fair to good (white) for $1000.

    Being an RT40 it will probably be a 2R unless it was the sport version which is a 4R. I believe they do bolt up without much problem. The head size etc will be the concern, but there is an old bloke in Townsville who last I knew had an 18RG ready to go in to his RT40. I dont think theres much involved in fitting them though, the bellhousing fits (but you may want to upgrade to a W50 or W55 as the stock box may not stand up to the mighty 18RG), and you may need to play with your sump a bit... take photos when you next see it and post them up, we should have a fair idea of what will be involved.

    Oh, and why do you want a 1.8Ltr motor?? 18RGs are 1968cc, which makes them a 2Ltr

    Cool thanks heaps for that, wasn't aware they were 2ltr am fairly unnaware of this motors specs.

    I'll refer my mate to this thread for a wealth of 18-rg info, fairly sure thats the way he wants to go.
    (I wanted him to go 1uzfe, but he wanted to eventually be able to drive his car so we shelved the idea.)

    Ahh... the holden and nissan people have got to you... Toyota's engine designations have nothing to do with what capacity they are (take the 4ltr 1UZ for example)... so in pretty well every situation you can forget trying to figure out the capacity from the designation. For an example, take the R series, starting at 16R
    16R = 1.9Ltr
    18R = 2.0Ltr
    20R = 2.2Ltr
    21R = 2.0Ltr
    22R = 2.4Ltr

    Confused yet??
