hey all, i have a question im sure has been covered here, ive read the first few pages on the differences between the different versions of 18RG, what i need to know is. can the 18R-G carbs and cams be used in an 18R-GEU head? or is there differences with the change to EFI that stop me from doing so? the first post metions releifs had been made to allow for the injectors? do they hinder me using the factory sidedraught manifold? thanks folks

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tanks of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Nah, no issue at all mate. Many people have retrofitted carbs to the EFI engines. (The reliefs in the head are basically just little bits (<5mm) filed out of the head).

im converting my 18rgeu to carby its no problem but youll have issues with the mechanical fuel pump if your balance shaft doesnt have the eccentric to operate it

hmm, you might be right, i have a knackered 18RGU and an ok 18RGUE (or, will have soon) was hoping to just pull it apart, give it a freshen up, move all the stuff ill need from my carby engine and stick it in

If you are pulling it apart, then retrofitting the shaft from an R-GU will be fine.

2004Lowlux, that doesn't sound real good at all... the dowels are an important part of timing the things... not to mention stopping them from slipping on the cogs.

essentially thats what itll end up being as it wont be efi anymore.

owen, yup not a great outcome when i was cranking it with the rocker cover off it was rotating as it should so theres a question mark over the lack of dowledge causing the cam to slip though it would explain the occasional backfiring out the carby and resulting singed hairs on my arm.
im not sure where i can get another dowel, the guy at repco couldnt turn one up for me and he is usually pretty good at finding stuff

yeah what oman said, if it's going to be apart anyway, just whack the other shaft in at same time.

As for the dowels, you can get away short term with lobbing the end off an appropriate diameter stainless bolt. Have done that to get an engine going after dropping the dowel in the sump (have you pulled the sump off to see if it is in there??) or you could get the diameter and length of one (can measure mine tomorrow if needed) and get a machine shop to chop a few bits of stainless bar off for you, then use a file to round the edges. Should be able to get that for a six pack.

Oil pressure quiz for you gurus.

Run my race car at Wakefield in July, no probs all day till reversing car into pit garage and oil light comes on, I look at gauge - no pressure?
Let car cool down and recheck, all seems OK, maybe a little lower than it was.
Get car home, oil pressure OK and put car away.
Change oil and filter a few weeks later, oil light on and no pressure on gauge.
Stop and restart, pressure comes back light goes out. Rev motor and oil pressure goes up when I decelerate then drops again, then no oil pressure and light back on.
Stop and restart, hold revs up and pressure comes back then rockets up to 100psi then drops off to nothing.
I have done some homework to find the problem, but curious as to what you experts might say is happening.

PS: Just before I went to Wakefield, I fitted a new oil cooler and remote filter plus a new oil gauge and warning light.......................only 3 hours running before that was a fresh motor rebuild with new oil pump.

Could be the pressure relief bypass in the oil filter housing? depending where you are taking the oil pressure feed from it might be bypassing your sensor? I can't recall exactly how it's set up so just throwing out as an option.....others that spring to mind aren't very pleasant
