I'd put money on 45mm ITB's outperforming 45mm DCOE's, all else being equal.

I second the midget of the north.

I will also state that whilst MAD79R makes more peak power on the dyno - i kill him on the track. His 16.5 versus my 15.8.... add to that the extra power i have over any DCOE setup at the lower end of the scale (ie everyday driving).
    ...... butt scratcher?!

i feel compelled to add that my poorly tuned (poor cam timing that is)18rgeu has 74.6rwkw. Given a few more months to sort out my new shed so as that it actually has power and lights i can then play with her. Im looking for a min of 15rwkw gain, but like everyone else hoping for more.

    cheers

The track times probably have more to do with his car being heavier and possibly different gearbox/diff gearing.

can valve guides still be acquired for the 18rg? (not the valve stem seals as they come in the complete gasket set, I am talking about the guides that are placed into the headthat the valves fit inside).
Obviously i can ask toyota, but i am hoping that is not the only option.
Is it possible other valve guides may fit?

A head or engine reconditioner should be able to get them for you, probably put them in for you a reasonable $ if you have the head stripped.

    Yes they can.
I got some genuine ones a couple of months ago, fully finished items for $108.80 for the set, but I think that was trade price. Part number 11122-88250

ACL also do 18RG valve guides for the 8.5mm stem. I think they were fully finished (no internal fitting work required) but am not 100% sure. I don't know what the price was for those.

New main bearing bolts (90910-02042) were also available at the time through Toyota and also 22R flywheel bolts (18RG might be available too).

Best of luck with it, I got my parts from Robin at Peter Davey Toyota in Prospect.

really? acl do stuff like that?
well that begs another question then before i go down to sprint auto.

The valves for the 18rg are a non normal size apparently, does that mean that i could use a different valve guide to get a different more common diameter valve to fit or am i thinking too far outside the lines.

failing that, 3L ones can be used, but will have to be top cut

There is a larger variety of valve sizes available in 8mm stems than in 8.5mm.

The L series diesol engines and the 3R(I think) are some of hte very few engines that do have 8.5mm stems.
I'd only look into 3Rs if you wanted smaller valves for some crazy reason though.

are 3L valves plentiful to come buy and suitable as replacement vlaves in an 18rg or is that what Mr DOHC is talking about when he says 'fly cut'?
(diameters of vlave face same, valve stem length same etc.)
i have a spare head coming over from queensland with vlaves in it but if it is more worthwhile for me to spend a day at UPI seeing if i can take out people's eyes with flying collets then that sounds like much more fun

I have close to this setup in the '28 right now.... 9.7:1 pistons, 88253 head, but 88250 cams..

The next trick is finding some of the rare 44 Solexs.... me being the carbie moron that i am i have no idea if the two different sets i have here are 44s, ones a set from an 88210, the other from an 88253.

RE SOLEX. HM do you want I have three sets one in service two sets spare.

First series were repairable and had removable venturis also had choke setups which worked loose as they were fixed in place by 10MM bolt and a locking nut on the side of the barrell.
Second series had cast venturis inside the throat and not removable but not repairable.

Running original Solex-Mikuni's 21100-88232/88233 which were reshafted at 235000 km and are still running the car economically.

    FYI

44 and 40 have different venturi other wise same except for JETS air and fuel. I run 125 Fuel 80 air.
