I believe it is a stock engine but it has twin webbers not EFI and it has scorcher elec ign so maybe somethings a bit non stock with the cams.

The engine ran but has little compression

I would realign the cams, with the cam notch's at 12 o'clock and the confirm the dizzy is at no. 1 TDC. Also confirm the the crank is on compression stroke and not 180 deg out.

Some times these motors are dialed with one of the cams (exhaust i think) slightly advanced.

with the dizzy rotor at no 1 (TDC) the two cam shaft indicator marks are at about 11 oclock

as I spin the crank and the dizzy rotor to halfway between cyl1 and cyl3 the cam mark on the intake is at 12:00 and the exhaust is at 1:00

I believe timing should be 12:00 on both in and ex at TDC???

    Thanks, Jon
If the Cam timing is out, this might explain the low comps, however looking at the numbers it does not look good. Reset your cam timing as if it were a standard motor (ie 12:00 on both at TDC) and check the valve clearances to make sure they are not riding the valves open and then do a dry and wet comp test with the motor warm with throttles open and ign wire off (wet is two squirts of oil in each cyl).
That'l do for starters and let us know how you go.

Thanks, I'm having problems finding a manual for this engine and know very little about twincam motors (ie first time inside one)

For the Dizzy #1 is at about 5:00 or 7:00 I think - Down the bottom anyway Is that right or is it 180 out?

Hot and Cold Valve Clearances are?

Will I need to take the whole front timing cover off for Cam timing to check timing chain position on crank?

We have to remove the head anyway to check what the bores/rings/valves are like so will prob do that before re setting the timing.

    So in summary:
To remove head I just need to time to #1 TDC

*** Unsure if this bit is required when removing head *** Secure Timing chain (tie wire either side?? wedge??)

What is used to secure chain and does it even matter if chain moves)

    Crack Big Cam Bolts
    Remove Cam Gears
    Crack head bolts
    Remove head

Does the timing chain tensioner between the camshafts need to be removed or can it stay on the head?,

Is there a sequence for removing any of the timing tensioning stuff??

    Thanks, Jon

Wait for the green book scans.
this will show you the crank positions and the top chain gears(for dizzy) as they need to be aligned also. the gears behind the timing cover have a dot to shown positions.
So the bottom end need setting then the cams.
    good luck

Does anyone have a spare modified wet mid sump larger pan for an 18RG with an extra 2ltrs of capacity, or know someone in Sydney who can make one from the spare std sump I have???

Appreciate any help as I need to get this going in less than 6 weeks.

High energy sumps in Melbourne should be able to help.
