My suggestion is to take the head off, replace the upper timing chain while it is off ($40), take the sump off, get the head faced, and after you have finished doing what you needed to do with the timing cover, put it all back together with the knowledge you have a good seal. Personally I like to use a product called Hylomer to give the head gasket a better seal, but this is not essential.

I just hope you haven't farked your timing cover.
Wak. And in what way does one fark a timing cover?

    Hi,

one farks a timing cover by cracking it. And yes trust me, it does happen. Can be fixed but was a major pain in the ass.

hammer and brass drift is a good way of farking the timing cover when there is still a bolt there. The fact you have separated the gasket means you have moved the main part of the timing cover, whether that is enough to crack the aluminium or bend it to a point of no return remains conjecture until you get it off or try to re-assemble. Gut feeling is you will be ok, but be wary of doing that sort of thing in future.

Yeah it was only given a small tap with the brass drift (didn't want to damage the alloy, lol) and has only separated ~2-3mm at most. So i hope it'll be alright. I'm about to go outside and tear the head off now.

In addition to What o-man said - make sure that you fix the sump gasket too. They are very easily damaged when removing the timing case with the head on.

Oh hi, once again. Well tonights' efforts have brought both good and bad.

The good news is twofold. Firstly my timing cover isn't damaged. Secondly, my pergola looks like this:

It should have looked like this last night, however, when de-torquing the head bolts (in order, of course), i happened across one particularly stubborn one. I managed to wind it out so there was no tension on the head, but when it came to winding it out, it wouldn't have a bar of it. So i brought home 2 1/2 feet of mechanical advantage, and a can of rost off ice to show it who the boss was....

Turns out it's still the boss.

When spinning the bolt head, i checked out the thread to see if it was winding out. It wasn't moving. It's snapped, in the head. Awesome.

Front and rear coolant galleries need some love, i.e. they're completely blocked.

Oh well, at least it's a bit more naked now.

I did some wiring to my ECU tonight... the race is certainly on fellas Also my intercooker piping turned up, and my Optima battery should be here tomorrow (nice and compact ). My aim is 15th of October to have it ready to do the 800km per way trip to Cairns...
