    Hey guys,

Finally got time to take the cams off and measure the shims.

I am aiming to get the clearances closer to .32-.34 so am on the look out this weekend if someone in my area (ipswich, qld) had some shims in the size I need. (otherwise I'll just order some on monday)

This is what I have and what I want to aim for:
(ARGH it formats ok, but when saving changes it removes all the spaces!!)

exhaust Clearance Existing Shim Shim Size
    Shim Difference Wanted
    1 0.25 2.54 0.09 2.45
    2 0.25 2.5 0.09 2.41
    3 0.23 2.59 0.11 2.48
    4 0.23 2.47 0.11 2.36

Inlet Clearance Existing Shim Shim Size
    Shim Difference Wanted

    1 0.2 2.19 0.09 2.1
    2 0.19 2.24 0.1 2.14
    3 0.2 2.24 0.09 2.15
    4 0.23 2.29 0.06 2.23

I can mix and match 3 of my existing shims to give me the desired clearances which is a bummer. I measured up the spare head I've got and can only use one shim from that lot too

Anyway, if someone around my area has some I can buy, give me a PM please

    Dave

    Hi Steve,

If its the Precision Shims guy, then yeah

I am going to ring him tomorrow and order from him.

From his www parts page, I am guessing I need the bucket and shim type of diameter 13.8mm in the thicknesses I tried to show in the previous post.

I'm a bit concerned his minimum thickness is below what I need for the intake side, I'd hazard a guess that the valve stems hadn't been ground on this head ;(

Was there another company that does shims?

    Thanks

    Dave

did fuel injected blocks (88270) have a drive for the fuel pump on the aux shaft? it appears mine doesn't looks like i'll go with an electric pump

Mechanical fuel pumps are poo, I'd be getting an electric one regardless.

I would hazzard a guess... considering I have an 18R-GEU which was converted to carbs, and say yes... as there was a mechanical pump hanging off the side of mine, and I really doubt they would have changed out the aux. shaft when they imported them and changed them to carbies (common practice back in the day)

Pull the cover off, rotate the crank and see if there is a lobe going round... easiest way to find out.

There is no lobe on both of the shafts just a gear to drive the oil pump. but there was a fuel pump on there but all of the lines were blocked off. could i use an 18rc one if i put the 18rg cogs on? or is this not possiable?

Nope, sorry... the 18RG aux. shaft is longer at the front to allow for the dizzy drive gear.

hosking, that's correct, the 18RGEU aux shafts have no lobe for the fuel pump, or at least the later ones didn't. I've got a couple of those nicely balanced shafts myself and no, like Owen said, an 18R-C one won't do the job.

Owen, I'll let you can keep your lobed shaft.
I plan to build a couple of 18RGs and both of them will be EFI. Plus I have lobed shafts too.
