    depends, different on every car.

AFAIK the turbos can handle more boost with upgraded dump pipes, less restriction means they run cooler, less likely to blow themselves apart.

13-14psi on stock dump pipes, about 16psi with upgraded ones.

this is IMO, and ill be running 14.5 psi(1BAR) when i get my finances sorteded

with supporting mods, 13-14psi = 300rwhp more than enough fun.

Seems to vary a bit. If you rev it all the way out to 7000RPM on high boost, they are more likely to fail than doing that on stock boost.
I ran 15-16psi through mine for a few years with twin dumps perfectly until a bit of welding slag from my intercooler pipes hit the exhaust wheel on my front turbo.

My ones blow up, well one of the did at 16psi. The compressor blades on the front turbo smashed into the housing. Made one hell of a bang.

maintenance history amongst other things will play a big part but I agree with the above comments.

Stick to 14psi or less to be safe with stock dumps.

They will die in the end but if it isn't the exhaust wheel getting blown down the exhaust it will be oil seals.

jampac, what dumps/exhaust did you have? im curious to see if my theory is correct, the majority of people ive seen blow their turbos up have been pushing too much boost through a restrictive exhaust.

Stock dumps and catback exhaust, but daniel on here (dieseltrain) has run up to 18psi on stock dumps, so its not a consistent value you can put on. Anything over stock boost, do at your own risk, knowing that you maybe forking out big dollars and a tow truck to get your car back to a garage and fixed.

    yeah, i know its inconsistent.

but im just trying to get a general idea on how the stock turbos go.

ive heard of people running 20psi on stockers, along with people blowing them at stock boost.

there will always be "wild cards", but a general understanding would be good.

for instance, i know for a fact that nearly all 1J's will be able to run 13psi with no problems at all, with fuel, ecu, etc. etc. anything.

but anything above that, a more detailed understand would be sweet.

I did run 13-13.5psi for quite a while without issue.

But if you want to overboost relieably, buy a new turbo(s), its the only way.

i heard you can put starlet ct9 steel wheels on them without even rebuilding or high flowing the suckers and run 18 pound all day every day hyundai...

...might have to put up with the odd bit of smoke at each set of lights thought.

    $$$$ though

I had dumps when I popped my turbo, but it was foreign matter that caused them to die in my case.
Regular oil changes are a must if you want them to last, I do mine every 3000kms.

ribfeast, can you explain how something capable of causing so much damage, made it through your air filter, through your inducer wheel, through over a meter of piping consisting of all sorts of bends, an intercooler, a throttle plate, the intake valves, went through at least 1 "BANG", came back out the exhaust valves, and munched your turbo?

or did it kill the inducer, causing it to be unbalanced, and killing the exhaust side?
