carbie + turbo

hi all, does anyone here know of a turbo system that will run on a carbie motor.

I am sure that you would have to make sure that it gets the right amount of fuel to work properly, but i am just wondering if anyone here has done it before.

Any help would be great.

Not that common but there are a few factory efforts. There is the early 80's Australian sigma turbo and also the early Laser (KA or KB). From memory there are issues with running too much boost blowing into the carbies. I think the Sigma could only run about 8psi before there was issues with the fuel system.
Sorry cant remember anymore details but it can and has been done.

do alot of research first...my 1000+ hp build will be running a triple carbie setup on twin gt35r (or similar sized turbos) with a 340ci chrysler V8...the main thing is unlike injectors with a fuel map you need to be sure you dont lean out as you come onto higher boost, with a fuel map you can increase your fuel needs as the boost and rev range gets higher which isnt so easy using carbis (so be aware its going to be a pig on fuel). Also selecting the right carbi helps alot, the guys running big boost superchargers running carbies (which is old skool now days and has been done for years) will be a wealth of information so start by researching that side and reverse engineer it to turbo use, in alot of cases the carbies they are running will be exactly what you'll need for the turbo setup.

The net isnt the greatest souce but Mopar has some old books you can get still that go into the turbo cars they released in the 70's which had alot of sucess with carbies

In summary it (Maximum Boost) will say that blow thru is better than draw-thru carbi (which he suggests is crap) - but the ideal fuel delivery system is injection.

In this day and age you'd be nuts to choose carbies over EFI for a forced-induction engine, unless it's a fun experiment where you don't care too much about the results, or you're building a rod and want to keep the old-school look. If you're after practical results though, EFI all the way. It's easier, it's much better, and in most cases it ends up costing about the same.

that is a good point in regards to the cost, carbies made to handle boost are rediculously expensive and like you said which relates to what i'm doing is aesthetically setting up EFI on my car would look out of place (since rods are alot about keeping with the old skool technology and looks).

go and drive a g11r charade turbo. they run a blothrough carb and if you keep all the vacum and boost correctly fitted they are a rocket with excellent driveability . i have one at present with many mods and it will nearly cut down my 1jz hilux.if you was to copy this setup you would be laughing. cheers big wad

I've been wanting to find out a few things on how to turbo a carbie engine, might do it as a little project on my 3k in my ke20, just a cheapish way to get a bit extra power without having to do an engine conversion.

im actually planing on turboing my dads MGTC (1947) with an exa turbo and draw thru solex, just for a bit of fun. better finish my celica first though

hey coronac, if your thinking of doing injection on the cheap ive seen some good results from using the EFI system out of a centrepoint injected EA/EB falcon. cos its throttle body injected you could make an adapter and do a few mods to the stock manifold and it would bolt up, they have the fuel lines and return lines, TPS, idle up all built in. make a hat for it wire it up and away you go.

the only unknown is the injectiors, they use 2 huge ones and they supply a 3.9l N/A engine ok, so maybe it will do for a 1.2l turbs?

been looking into doing this exact thing on a 4k corolla.. too many projects damnit

FORD EB injectors are good for about 75kw each, so thatd probally support a ghetto turbo set up 1.2
