Default AE82 Wierd sound in front end.

    Hey there people.

Got an AE82 with a 4A-C and auto transmission, yeah yeah whatever

Anyhow to the point. All is well, so far, but when you start to drive upto around 35km/h and up, theres this wierd grinding / knocking noise, that you can feel through the wheel (lightly), more through the floor, and its quite audible, it does get faster the faster you go, but it doesnt matter what gear im in, i can put it in Neutral and let it roll it will still do the same thing.

Wheel bearings were replaced in last full scale service about 3,000km ago, everything else works fine no probs at all, its just really annoying thats all.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

jack it up, spin the wheels individually and see if you can hear noise...

CV's? perhaps they fucked the bearing install or forgot to tighten? perhaps brakes dragging? could be anything...

that you can feel it thru steering wheel indicates it's something vaguely connected to steering, ie the hub/wheel/bearings/CV's

probably the CV's. Turn your wheels to full lock and slowly turn the car around and listen for a grinding sound.... Or you can get your head behind the front wheels and see if there is grease all over the place at the CV's

I did the turning thing as its the first thing my old man told me to do, and there was zero noise.

I jacked teh car up and span each wheel individually, zero noise.

    not sure about brakes

its really wierd, i did however notice lately though, when i do sudden acceleration or sudden letoff off the pedal, sometimes you'll feel a jolt and a knocking sound (like just a straight, knock and thats it), sometimes it happens.

hmm, in that case, check all the suspension mounting points to see if any are loose...

and ALSO check your engine mounts... if they are loose, the engine can rotate and make a knock sound..... if you are cruising with a certain amount of throttle, there may be just enough torque on the engine to raise it a little off the mount and cause a continuous knocking sound....

or it could be exhaust tapping on something also....

My brother's AE82 makes some awful clanking noises from the drive shafts. The fact that you dont have any harsh rattles on a tight corner is strange though - thats usually a dead giveaway of a rooted CV.

It could be something to do with the auto but I dont know anything about the auto transaxle on the AE82.

That said if it is concerning you you could replace the drive shafts when you convert the car to a 5 speed

my old ae82 used to make a clunk noise when you release the clutch during gear changes, ended up being a fucked clutch and flywheel

Thoroughly check the engine mounts. I had been giving a young lady a few driving lessons(first time in a manual), and after a few weekends, there were strange rattles from up front. Checked all the visible mounts, looked good! Got it up on a hoist, and pulled out the lower mount access cover, one bolt was really loose, and the other had chaffed on the thread. Replaced both, no more noises. That was an AE82 SECA.

    cheers Chuck.

Sounds like you have worn hub bearings, i had the same issue with my car and it had ended up being a combonation of the bearings and the tie rods being worn, to test jack up the front end, lock the steering and then "wiggle" each wheel, if there is any sort of play chances are that it needs new tie rods (don't forget there are inner and outer ones) if you cannot get the wheels to wiggle then you just need bearings and hopefully its not worn to the point where you need a new hub (i needed one) the repair is not easily acomplished as you need a hydraulic press to pull apart the hub and then to press it back together. Also dont forget that you may need new bearing seals.

just typed all that and then noticed you have replaced the bearings...... ummm could still be that the hub is worn and replacing the bearings won't fix that. also the nuts that hold on the hub need to be torqued to about 180-220 ft/lbs if they are loose it will also cause road noise. other than that, i agree with checking the cv joints also your axles may be bent and will need to be replaced.

first thing i would do though is check if the wheels wiggle that will tell you if its tie rods/bearings, if no wiggle most likely cvs/axles

    good luck

    hi
I really think you should check your front brake pads!! Especially the inside ones!
I used to own a manual ae82 and after lending the car to a friend for six months i was driving it and i heard this grinding clunking noise. Pulled the wheel off and the inside pad was worn to the metal on one end!! Turns out that when my friend says 'I got it serviced for you!' he actually means 'I went to Burtons and bought a set of $25 pads and stuck them on the car and threw out your only half used Bendix Performance pads!!!'
Anyway after I machined the discs and put new pads on it was fine
    Just my 2c worth!
