car just stopped, wont restart.

now i know this is not a toyota but the same principles apply and nissan forums dont seem to have much commonsense.....

my brother was driving his n13 pulsar home last night when the engine just stopped, no spluttering, no carrying on like a school girl, it just stopped dead. so i towed it home last night got around to having a look at a few things just then, the fuel pump fires up and turns back off as it should when i turn the key to on, it has spark, i tested the injector loom and both wires are charged with 12v, this doesnt seem normal to me one should be grounded should it not?, all the fuses are fine, relays im unsure of which is which as theres no markings on the lids of the holders. it will turn over fine but just wont fire.

i checked that the map sensor is plugged in and all is good there, tps etc is all plugged in. so none of the sensors should be stopping it from starting?


Any ideas guys, its hot outside and its starting to give me the shits

injectors should get fed 12V, the ECU provides an earth to trigger (open) them

crank engine and see if injector pins on ECU go to ground?

sudden cut suggests spark, it have spark when cranking?

how does it get a timing signal? does tacho climb up at all when cranking?

these cars shit the ignition module a lot. they are cheap and easy to replace.

chuckster, the tacho does jump up and down when cranking like normal....it gets the timing signal from the dizzy which is connected to the cam like normal.....


just turned the motor over while checkin voltages to the injector wires, both positive and negative wires are holding 12v while cranking, which leads me to belive the ecu has had the dick... agreed?

i'd check the injector drivers in the ECU by disconnecting all the injector plugs, working out which wires are going to the ECU (e.g. the ones not with 12V) and then seeing if those other wires go low resistance to ground when you crank the engine.

It's only a quick switching action so a cheap multimeter might not show it.

yer ok i pulled the covers off the ecu, and theres no visible damage , the multimeter is not a cheap one although that means nothing when something is switch so fast, ill have a look tomorow when its not so dark, thanks heaps for the help....

could be any of the relays that your not sure about, that are no longer making contact.

a problem i had with an previous car was a couple things combined, the battery terminals werent crash hot and after a bump my car simply died, also the battery would come loose very easily also shutting the car down isntantly (usually after a sharp corner or bump).

maybe move the battery around a bit and turn the terminals over see if anything happens

yes it could be the relays i just find it hard to point the finger at them when the injector wires are charging up, the ignition system is working as it should the starter and fuel pump are firing up the only thing thats not happening is the injecotors arent squirting fuel into the engine. so it sought of point the finger at the injector drivers or something to do with them,....

ill try moving the battery around tomorow but once again it doesnt seem voltage related, but it cant hurt to try its always the things you never think of..

yes in my old 3sgte, i had a major bug of a problem just as you described mate, it was the main EFI relay and wasnt actually the relay as i replaced it but the wiring underneath it had corroded away and would make the car die for no reason and had the EXACT same symptoms as u have descirbed the car would die and not start sometimes for a few days and sometimes for a few hours..still had spark and all. took ages for me to figure out.. id say check that wiring, could save alot of time, seems as they age the wiring does also..
