From what I can gather, 10-40w is what most use.
Be it syth. or mineral.
Ive gone for 10-40w Valvoline SemiSyth.

I'm going to be doing an oil change on my newly bought Cressida tomorrow, but I was just wondering what sort of oils you guys use and recommend. I've got a puralator oil filter here just looking for oil recommendations

For any engine, the answer is Mobil1 5w50 (unless you're running it in).
1987 AW11 MR2 Supercharger (4AGZE)
1974 TA22 Celica (2TG bored and stroked)
Thanks to James Cameron's Terminator films, we know that robots are stronger, faster, tougher and more Austrian than the rest of us.
Is it that simple?Originally Posted by Starfire
Don't you have to worry about the weights of oil the engine is designed for?
different weights will require different clearances in the engine and bearings to do their job won't they?

all the brands ive seen reccomend 20w50, so thats what i use. but the high heat of summer is over so something thinner could be ok.
dunno if id bother spending as much as mobil 1 is on a 7mge, its not exactly a high performance engine.

your spot on. that is the issue.Originally Posted by OnAll-FOUR

the amount of people who come into work choosing oils for their car, they have no clue, and its proven here neither do some of you (sorry, but its true)
there is a generic rule that goes, pre 90's motors 20w50, early 90's motors 15w40, late late 90's motors 10w30, though there are always exceptions to these rules. Some motors in the 90's have lower tolerances so they require thinner oils.

basically any standard mineral oil will be fine for the mighty 7m, just keep the oil clean and change it every 5000ks
give it an engine flush too,
Yeah I'm in the process of giving it a full service, changing all the filters, oils, etc... doing oil, and probably coolant tomorrow, replacing that with some red stuff... treat it well until it pops a gasket, or something, and then junk the engine.
if your changing the coolant to toyata red, make sure you give it a really good flush, ie, drain coolant, fill with water, drain water, refill....repeat a couple of times till you get clear water running out of the drain tap....
not good practice to mix coolants, as they can reat with eachother, and do more harm then good.
have fun with the fuel filter, there a bitch!
i used to use penrite HPR30 and it worked a dream.
